To-day done much travelling - Met my old friend [[?Fennie]], the French barber, formerly of Cin.  One whom nearly every man in Cin knew & honored for his eccentric but really good qualities.
On an invitation of Mr Grinnell & Mr. Fisk, librarian of Geographic Society visited the "Atheneum Club" 5th Avenue.  Was accompanied by Mr. G. from his residence.  Was there introduced to many of the [[underlined]] 1st Class men. [[/underlined]] The object of this Club appears to be for bringing together those who are indeed gentlemen that by associating one with another they may all become better acquainted with each other - at the same time keeping in view general increase of Knowledge-improvement in Manners, combined with innocent amusements.  I met these men [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] whose minds were a [[?volume]] of light to me:  Flint with steel--fire.  Honest discussion of 2 minds

differing, but anxious for truth, produces more & more light.
This Club occupies a fine mansion from ground to [[space]]  It is richly furnished throughout.  Paintings of the highest merit encircle you.  But after all, God-like thoughts of noble men then, now an anon, flash a truth that doeth men good to receive & cherish it.  The subject of Mr G. & myself of course was that of the proposed Expedition.
I am not awaiting the arrival of Capt. Quayle from Canandaigua.  He is looked to as the 2d Kane to conduct an Expedition to the North to produce results that shall call forth the World's approbation as did Kane the 1st.

Evening attended a Meeting of the American Geographical & Statistical Society - Dr. Hawks, presiding - Two papers were read by their authors, Geo. H. Cook, Esq. Geologist of N.J. & H.L. Hosmer, Esq  - The former's subject was "Geology of the Sea Coast of N.J." - the latter's - "The Moun[[tains]] of the West" - What an itching some [[underlined]] few [[/underlined]] have to detract from from the fame & glory of Columbus by act[[ing?]] the Northmen & native chimerical deeds.
