Friday Mar. 2d/60 Spent the day mostly at the Geographical Library - Met there Dr. Hayes - Mr. Fisk very kindly took me to the N.Y. Historical Society Rooms where I was introduced to Mr Moore the librarian - Discussed Arctic - Found him great friend & admirer of Peter Forer, Esq of Washington D.C. Advised me to see him. Mr. F. went with me down into [[strikethrough]] Egpt [[/strikethrough]] "Egypt" - Saw there the works of over 3000 years ago - Marble sculptured - that had been excavated from Babylon. Saturday Mar 3/60 On invitation, visited ^[[this Eve]] Cyrus W. Field, 84=E 21st Street. Having spent some 15 minutes placing my mission before him, Prof. O.M. Mitchel, formerly of Cins. entered - Soon came Dr. Adams of N.Y. - then a gentleman of Manchester Eng. accompanied by Mr Wm Angus of Montreal Canada West. - In a body we were taken to the supper room [[end page]] [[start page]] [[in shadow possibly from another page]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] executed up in the Andes. [[?Hays]] - a few rounds more - then down into the parlor - thence to opening [[underlined]] "baked-oysters", [[/underlined]] all seated around the board of our hospitable host - the 20th Century man - [[underlined]] the-Atlantic-Cable-genius [[/underlined]] that linked two worlds into one - Cyrus W. Field - the [[triple underlined]] American! [[/triple underlined]] yes 20th Century man! One hundred years ahead of the common people. [[underlined]] He's the man for my model. [[/underlined]] - Mrs. Field seemed interested in my proposed expedition. I shall not soon forget this excellent visit - The Indian [[underlined]] "shedding" [[/underlined]] - coat in which Mr F. offered in the "Muscle & health-making-room" high up, where I succeeded in knocking down one "Ten-pin" with three Balls - & had [[underlined]] none [[/underlined]] to share!
