Friday 9th/
Saw Capt. S.O. Buddington & his "Cudlargo" off on the boat. The Capt. is a genuine soul - so I think - He appears to do all he can for me in carrying out my purpose.
Says that he will attend to the building of a Boat - of the selection of a proper companion ^[[for me]], who is experienced in the language, habits and Lands of the Esquimaux - that he will secure a proper crew of nation, consisting of 6 to accompany me from Queen Elizabeth [[?Island]] [[?ran]] north entrance to Beare Sound to Boothia & King William's Land, there remaining as my command for 2 years. Capt. B's kind offers will be remembered as long as I live - to him I will yet give full credit for all his assistance, advice, &c. &c. The evening I spent with Capt. & Mrs. Chapel at the U.S. Hotel who return to their home at Norwich, Ct. to-morrow. This interview was indeed one of great interest to me.

The Capt. offered to render all aid to me that he could. His regrets seemed deeply to affect ^[[him]] for the disappointment I had met [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] - especially that he was one of the innocent parties who had indirectly contributed to it. Mrs. C was equally overwhelmed with the calamity, yet as by premonition she had anticipated it by the conduct of Capt. Q. ^[[& Dr. I.I.H.]] at the meeting of the Geographical Society. But away with this dark cloud - Let us have bright pictures - With much reluctance did I bid adieu to Capt. & Mrs. C. I assured them it would give me much pleasure to meet them again - but if I could not see them again for 3 years, I hoped them to be able to say: [[underlined]] 'My Mission is fully accomplished - survivors, thank Heaven, have been found.'! Saturday 10th March
Called this Morning with the outline of a proposition to Mr Grinnell - for him to consider - & then to suggest & advise - He said that on Monday morning, by calling at his office I should then learn his conclusion.
