What a glorious world would be this if filled with men & women endowed with the same high & noble purpose of life as is Henry Grinnell!  He is a benefactor to his race - [[underlined]] a perfect type of a noble man! [[/underlined]]
When he passes from earth, the World will lose a Soul that has infused its goodness & blessedness throughout its length & breadth; & yet what spirit of new birth will not feel that in [[underlined]] the "Blessed mansions of the Just" will that soul be forever? [[/underlined]]  I shall ever remember the kindness ^[[to me]] of Henry Grinnell -   After I left him, I went to [[underlined]] "Franklin" [[/underlined]] Square & called on Mr. Vail, teacher of Navigation.  I had seen him once before.  I told him I was deeply anxious to take ^[[to-day]] the 1st Lesson of a course -  He proposed to give me ^[[the course]] for $15.00 thus I had understood

that he would do it for $10. -  I laid before him my case - I propose to place all I had in his charge as security if he would commence now to give me lessons.  Into his hands I placed my watch, assuring him within 2 or 3 weeks I would replace it by the payment of $15.00.  Navigation I must understand or else how shall I lead forth from the Wilderness of the North, the poor [[underlined]] survivors [[/underlined]] of the Franklin Expedition whom I go to seek, & reclaim to their Land of Freedom?
I go to take my inception lesson at 3 o'clock this PM.
My purpose now is ^[[to]] get prepared as soon as [[underlined]] circumstances [[/underlined]] will admit for my voyage to the North - I shall hope to leave by the last Tuesday of May with Capt.
