12 o'clk noon - Capt. Christopher B. Chapel has just called upon me.  He expressed to me the sorrow of himself & wife for the frustration of my plans by the Capt. Q.'s conduct.  Indeed he stated that they passed nearly a sleepless night on that a/c.  This shows the [[underlined]] humanity [[/underlined]] of their hearts - should I not let this exhibition of the interest that is felt for me by almost strangers cheer me on ^[[in]] this humanitarian cause I have embarked in?  The Capt. presents me his idea that it is possible that he or his brother may proceed in the spring to Repulse Bay or in that vicinity to ^[[fish for]] whale - & that the ^[[vessel]] [[strikethrough]] may possibly [[/strikethrough]] will probably Winter there.  He says that he has been thinking the matter over & has come to the conclusion that it will be quite as well

for me to have my company carried by a whale vessel to Repulse Bay as to have a vessel on purpose as he thinks that "Repulse Bay" on the Eastern entrance of Hecla & Fury Straits will be nearest point that can be reached by ships entering by way Hudson Strait.  He offers to write me in a week on the matter of Wintering next season at Repulse Bay.  If he or his brother concludes to do that then the invitation awaits me to accompany to some point.
Took my 1st Lesson in Navigation to-day - commencing at 3 & completing it at 4 1/2 o'clock -  The old gentleman G. Vail, is good at [[underlined]] instructing [[/underlined]] ^[[in other words good at]] conveying to his pupil that knowledge which will be of practical benefit without lumbering it up with useless dressing.  Mr. Vail, some days since very kindly exhibited & explained to me the uses of his Globe & Celestial, sphere, the 2 in one instrument.  Really he is a genius -  There he is pent up in an old - yet his companions are the stars
