12 o'clk M.  This morning 1/2 past 9 ^[[o'clk]] as per appointment, I called down to the office of Mr. Grinnell -  We Had some interesting conversation -  He read a letter from his son "Cornelius", who with a sister of 20 years of age is ^[[visiting]] in Europe -  They had attended a Reception by the Queen - Also ^[[was at]] a party given by Lady Franklin.  At the latters place, Mr G. met McClintock.  [[strikethrough]] The [[/strikethrough]]  One point of conversation between ^[[him]] (son) Sir Leopold McClintock was that of the [[underlined]] "terms" [[/underlined]] used by said McC. in his ^[[later]] Narration of the Voyage of the "Fox" calling Dr. Hays & party who left Dr. Kane - [[underlined]] "deserters".! [[/underlined]]
It seems McClintock has decided opinions of said act of Hayes & party - & furthermore [[underlined]] that he dare express them! [[/underlined]]

Mr Grinnell handed me a letter wherein he commends my proposed course - & finally offers to contribute to the requisite fund for carrying out [[strikethrough]] my [[/strikethrough]] the enterprise.  While at Mr. G's - Dr. Hays, accompanied by ^[[a]] Mr. McCormick [[strikethrough]] who [[/strikethrough]] came in.  I handed to Mr. G. a simple note instructing him to endeavour to have his son Cornelius obtain in Eng. all the information he could of McClintock, Ross &c - & to get from Lady Franklin her opinion of the course that should be pursued while on King William Land & Boothia.  I furthermore desired ^[[(expressed in said note)]] that his son should get ^[[Charts or large scale of]] McClintock's & Hobson Discoveries of the Coasts of King William's Land.  Shall start at 4 o'clock P.M. for Phila.  Wrote a note to Messrs. Williams & Haven - & one to Capt. Quayle.
