Really, I now believe from his [[insert]] (Mgan's)[[/insert]] appearance which I watched very attentively, that he did not - & does not - appreciate this act of his in the light of any one brought up in civilized life would. When Ugan came into my immediate presence this Fall, I asked him why he had done so? I judge only of his appearance that this matter was only an every day affair with him.
At 1st, when [[strikethrough]] 1st [[/strikethrough]] his attention was drawn to the act, he put on his laughing face as usual. But when he saw the Capt. & myself with "long faces", Mgan had one too! It was in seeing us [[insert]] so [[/insert]] so that this Iron Son from the North was quite serious!
Mgan seriously offered to make amends by promising that I should accompany him & party to-morrow. This of course I declined.
Capt. B. assured me at the time I felt so highly indignant at Mgan's not fulfilling his promise, that he (Mgan) did not mean harm or injury - + advised that I should not treat the matter [[insert]] as [[/insert]] tho' a civilized White man had done the act. From my own observations in the termination of this matter, I now conclude that Mgan did not intend to wrong me. [[underlined]] Intending to do it or not, I forgive him [[/underlined]].
How my heart laments not arriving at Repulse Bay this Fall. By being there, I should be near the field of my operation. Had I one or two White men or 2 Esquimaux I should, (D.V.) go to Repulse Bay this Season. The distance is only about 700 miles & with good weather & a fair wind we could accomplish it in 2 weeks or less. There I should undoubtedly see Capt Christopher Chapel of the "Syren Queen" & his brother of.
I should meet with a kindly reception from him as he invited me by letter to come aboard his ship & partake his hospitality if I ever come within sight of his vessel. Not only this but he visited me while in New London the eve before my embarking for the purpose of extending an invitation to accept a passage on board his vessel to Repulse Bay. He spent the evening with me at the Metropolitan Hotel where I put up & presented me with a pair of Kum-mings[[guess]] (boots) of the natives which I now have on & a pair of Arctic mittens
