While all others were hastening on to the Boat's landing, I took the circuitous route of following the shore to to seek & gather rare stones. I was late in getting to the Boat.
Notwithstanding this & the delay I caused our return to the "Rescue" all felt well repaid by the accumilation of the specimens I had. [[strikethrough]] gathered [[/strikethrough]] At various points, I saw the circles of Stones which had been used in fastening down the skin (summer) tents of [[insertion]] the [[/insertion]] natives. Here & there, drift timber met my eye.
We had a hard pull to get back to the "Rescue" the wind blowing almost a gale. I took a tug [[insertion]] at [[/insertion]] the oar. A novel sight, I mixed in with Esquimaux (men & women) rowing! The women are excellent - strong at the oars. We got back at VIII 1/2 o clock having had a fine time of it.
To-morrow we expect to go through Bear Sound wh. is some Ten miles S.E. of us, hoping to sail into Frobisher Strait some distance & [[underlined]] make harbor where never White man has been before us! [[/underlined]] May it be that we shall do it.
What a picture for the pen & pencil, the scenes of to-night! To a very late hour, the little Cabin of the Historical "Rescue" resounded to merry voices of both Esquimaux & Americans! Songs were sung, jokes cracked, yarns spun, & dances enjoyed in by all!
The song of "Franklin & His Grave" was beautifully executed by a few of our men.
Retiring time had come & gone, but, [[underlined]] none retired [[/underlined]]. Capt. B. & I took the floor & Morgan & Lamb the upper Lanboard birth; Gardiner the same of the Star-board. Never did I hear the like in quality & quantity of sharp, well-timed jokes that streamed forth from Morgan.
Lamb, desirous of getting [[underlined]] some [[/underlined]] sleep, sharply cried out: 'Come Morgan, lie still, you've got this bed all ruffled up!' 'Well by, - who ever heard before of getting white oak boards tumbled up!' was the ready reply of Morgan.
'Well there's no comfort here' said Lamb.

Transcription Notes:
Ugan should apparently be Mgan considering how M's are made. He uses 'birth' for 'berth' (bed in ship)
