At 3 o'clock Capt. B. straightened up! Some 15 minutes before, he [[strikethrough]] had waked up [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] awoke [[/insertion]] & undertaken to demonstrate to his puzzled mind [[underlined]] where he was - & what he was! [[/underlined]] A truth worth respecting, that hardly any one in his life time but that has experienced the impossibility of deciding; on 1st waking up, from a sound sleep, where he or she was! I have often awoke from a sound sleep & studied a long time before I could [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] satisfy my mind as to the [[strikethrough]] reality [[/strikethrough]] realities.
I had gotten up in the night & made my way to an elevated seat back of the stove where I laid myself up as an on a shelf. My pillow consisted, principally, of the geological specimens I had gathered, the Morning before.
Sweet sleep had been mine for about 2 hours, when the [[underlined]] loud thinking [[/underlined]] of Capt. B. aroused me. Tho' [[insertion]] I was now [[/insertion]] awake, yet no one knew it but myself. Therefore I had ample opportunity to note in mind the difficulties under wh. our good Commander was laboring.
It was a strange ship to him [[insertion]] at least [[/insertion]] to sleep in. Three lights were in good trim when we retired, but now all was dark - "dark as pitch" down in the little cabin.
