Friday, Aug 24th, 1860
The morning fine! Barometer ^[[has been]] rising steadily for several days. This eve it stands at 30.075 higher than any time since leaving the states.
At noon it began to rain.
To-day drew up article of agreement between Capt B. & the Esquimaux he has hired for Whaling. They signed it by making their mark X.
Ku-jej-se has made an excellent sketch chart of Nen-gum-mi-uke, Northumberland Inlet Bear Sound & lands adjacent- especially of the so called Frobisher Strait (?) He signifies his willingness to [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] accompany me to King William's Land next season, but declines to return this year. He will take his wife with him - She will be as valuable as a man - is excellent at the oar - ^[[at]] making Boots skin clothing etc. etc.
Capt. Buddington informs me that Capt Parker an old English whaler was ^[[the 1st]] in this Bay - in 1847 - His men refused service & he was obliged to leave without attempting to whale. Ten years after he came home - & also Capt Sutten. The next year Capt. Sutten returned  caught two whales & left. - Sun a plenty but the men being engaged in voyages would "Stern to" desireous to avoid any business [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] by wh. they would get ^[[their clothing]] soiled!
To-day trade with Esquimaux commenced for whale-bone & walrus tusks. Several Polar Bear skins have already been bartered for by the George Henry.
