on the one hand a desolate mountain on the other, a rock [[strikethrough]] ribbed [[/strikethrough]] ribbed Island. Beneath this arch dancing on the bosom of chrystal waters was the model boat that is to convey me & my party (God willing) to King William's Land on the mission to which my heart & life is devoted. May this auspicious picture of to-night prove true to my heart wishes!

Five Whales seen to-day! Waters too quiet to capture them. The return from the mountain. Pellucid waters here - destitute of fish! Could see down 18 to 20 fathoms deep. The immense forests below! By looking down (but a little ahead) it appeared as if we were the next moment to run foul of rocks. Keeping the eye fixed on a given rock [[strikethrough]] [[rock ?]] [[/strikethrough]] when we came over it, said apparent shoal rocks would be 25 to 35 feet below! My search for the other fossil stone in the vicinity of the spot where I found the two just succeeding our landing!

After 1/2 an hour patient seeking, found one more fossil stone. It was imbedded in sand wh. was covered over with moss. The fossil itself, as it shows, was blackened with age. The spot where I found it was some 10 feet above high water mark & some like 10 rods from the shore. There were some three Granite rocks near together between which this specimen lay. The rocks of the region are granite. The specimen had the appearance of having been there time immemorial.
Ku-jes-se would like to go to America with me. He is decidedly American in feeling. My promise is if I succede as I anticipate he & his nuliana shall accompany me.
Hour of rising during Whaling season 3 1/2 to 4 oclock.

Here & there [[strikethrough]] Where [[/strikethrough]] I set my foot on [[underlined]] terra firma [[/underlined]]. The bright red of deciduous leaves [[strikethrough]] met [[/strikethrough]] meets my eye. Occasionally there is a carpet of beauty!
