* [[underlined]] smoking [[/underlined]] before us. Taking from the hands of ^[[the Esquimaux]] Mgar, his Seal-Knife, I pared off a delicate little ^[[slice]] [[strikethrough]] piece [[/strikethrough]] of Whale ligament,[[underlined]] slid [[/underlined]] closed my eyes & cried out "Turkey"! But it did'nt go down, so easy! not because stomach had pushed[[guess]] up its sentinel to say: 'No Whale can come down here'! but because [[underlined]] it was tougher than any Bull-Beef of Christendom! [[/underlined]]
I masticated ^[[away]] for a full 1/2 hour, & then found it, seemingly, tougher than when I began! But I found out, after a while, that I had been [[underlined]] laboring [[/underlined]] in vain! - laboring under a mistake! - that the Esquimaux custom [[strikethrough]] was [[/strikethrough]] ^[[is]] to get as [[?]]t a piece into their [[strikethrough]] most widely [[/strikethrough]] distended mouths as they can cram, & then, Boa-constictor-like, ^[[first]] lubricating [[strikethrough]] it ^[[then]] [[/strikethrough]] swallow it quite whole!
"When you're in Rome do as the Romans do!" I tried the [[underlined]] Esquimaux [[/underlined]] plan, & it [[underline]] worked [[/underline]] - like ^[[underlined]] ^[[-Whale!]] [[/underlined]] [[strikethrough]] Whales [[/strikethrough]]! I deem it prudent to [[strikethrough]] [[/strikethrough]] postpone the like trial to some other day!
The 'Try-Work", are now in full blast. The ship's company is divided in two Watches, expecting to run night & day till the Blubber has [[strikethrough]] all [[/strikethrough]] parted with its oil.

*The Blood of this whale a short time after its death was rising of 100[[degree symbol]] Far. Forty eight hours after, its Krany was still quite warm!

A regular rain storm again. This morning 3 o'clock it began to storm [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] vehemently. At 5 o'clock the fires were allowed to die away & soon all hands quiet, turning in to shelter - to read - to tell yarns & to sleep! From 4 o'clock yesterday P.M. to 5 this morning the proudest of this whale is expected to be {100 Barrels oil
{2000 lbs Whale Bone
The longest lamina of Whale bone measured - 11 feet & 1 inch
To-night ^[[X1 oclk]] Capt B. called me on deck to show me his infallible sign of a N.W. poised & also of the present novel sight of the Esquimaux village representing a city of lights. Since the whale was captured each tent at night is resplendent. The blubber lamps of the natives now send forth cheering rays of light, the whole night long when before Ay-ling graced [[strikethrough]] [[?]] we [[/strikethrough]] the Waters of Knen-yum-mi woke Bay, all was dark as night could make it.
