[[underlined]] all [[/underlined]] [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] ^[[my]] dogs ^[[(as I then thought)]] came dancing around me, save one - & where he (Me-lak) was I could not tell. The dog which [[strikethrough]] the dogs [[/strikethrough]] my dogs had so desperately whipped, ran off. I supposed him to be one of Mgar's. Not finding so serious a matter as I expected, I returned. Not long after, the 6 dogs against one - I should make the exception of "Flora" she never fights - then - the 5 dogs against one were at it again. Pitious were the cries of the poor sufferer, with a glass we could see the movements of the dogs. At one time the poor dog would be, as it were, running for his life the others pursuing. Having caught up, all would pitch in to the one. The desperate part would [[strikethrough]] be [[/strikethrough]] soon ^[[be]] through with, ^[[when]] all ^[[but one]] would release their hold while ^[[the]] one would stand guard over the victim. [[strikethrough]] Having gained in their sport [[/strikethrough]], Again & again did they renew attacks. One of these encounters occur^[[e]]d [[strikethrough]] drred [[/strikethrough]] in the edge of the water where the carcase of the last whale lies. We could stand it no longer. Capt B. & Sterry [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] took a boat went over to the Island got the dog tho with much difficulty [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] he having become so wild.
Lo & behold it was Me-lak! Never was I more astonished. What deceived me so strongly was the dog running from me - & [[underlined ]] with tail down [[/underline]]. An Esquimaux dog usually carries his tail prettily thrown forward in a circle over his back. Mine almost invariably do this. But this was the 1st reverse case. This dog ^[[so outrageously misused]] now aboard wounded in every part. Poor fellow, I fear he will die. It is an extraordinary case. Here ^[[is a case where]] the dogs have been associated together for months getting along as well as animals of the kind well could. At last a combination is formed to disgrace & destroy one of their number. A timely visit to the Island has saved the dog - tho after all his case is doubtful. It is said by [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] Capt.B. Me-lak can never be associated with the others in a team unless it be as Leader. They will turn in kill him thinking him (Melak) a coward.
One Whale seen to-day. Afternoon Capt B. manned a boat & went out. Mgar & crew continued aboard. Mgar has the Sulks. A strange people the Esquimaux- they know not restraint - force compulsion. Just before noon Capt. went out "[[underlined]] Clamming" [[/underlined]]- got a bucket full!
