a knife & a cotton 10 cent handkerchief. The watch I could not spare & the knife was my "Lupton" which of course would not. Giving my [[strikethrough]] face [[/strikethrough]] hirsute face ^[[that is mustache & whiskers]] a good-wipe of all ^[[super abundant]] overflowing Seal-blood, [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] I stepped up to the really fair looking damsel & presented her with the "ten-center". It was an unexpected present & never shall I forget the ecstasy with which it was received! It was of high colors & of good size, had been ^[[only]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]] ^[[a few]] weeks in use! [[strikethrough]] If [[/strikethrough]] Had I presented [[strikethrough]] a draft on the [[/strikethrough]] one hundred dollars in gold it would not have ^[[been]] so acceptable as the ^[[Federal]] Dime handkerchief! Shaking ^[[each]] & all heartily by the hand, I departed making my exit on all fours! Smith showed his disappointment on leaving my good time as well as he could! From a distance Smith called out to me. I replied. [[strikethrough]] Followed [[/strikethrough]] Following this I heard a voice calling out "Mr. Hall! Mr. Hall!" I turned & who should it be but poor Blind George. I ran to him & grasped him by the hand throwing my arms firmly around him. Noble fellow! I respect - I love him! He is worthy of any man's! Poor George was in trouble! His bosom heaved with sighs! He tried to tell me his sorrows - His very soul seemed to struggle for utterance.
Mgan home today - My pik-a-niny away go! Mr. Hall, Speak'um-my pik-a-nin-y [[underline]] here [[/underlined]] (putting his hand on his bosom) & me no cry--Pik-a-nin-y [[strikethrough]] no [[/strikethrough]] gone Blind George cry!" Mr. Hall Speak me my pik-a-niny - Speak me my pik-a-niny here? The fact is Mgan to-day had been up and taken away Poohe Blind George & own child on which he dotes his love. Mgan has George's wife Polly - who deserted him when he ^[[G]] became blind. George desired I would get the child & return it to him. I never saw [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] one that deserved greater commiseration than Poor Blind George! Called in another tent - was treated with a liberal piece of Black-Skin (Frozen Whale Skin) after it ^[[had]]^ been well cleaned of foreign substances by a liberal application of the lady's tongue! Sat awhile conversing with the 2 families occuping said tupic - & eating black skin. Met there [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] the Esquimaux whose ^[[look]] [[strikethrough]]s[[/strikethrough]] always reminds me of ^[[the great American Traveller]] Bayard Taylor, for when his Wooden spectacles are off (his injured eyes oblige him to wear them almost constantly), he looks very much like B. Taylor. I honor him for his [[strikethrough]] we [[/strikethrough]] unassuming, noble bearing & his likeness to that distinguished traveller! Met in the village "Puto" with her Anglo-Saxon [[strikethrough]] blooded [[/strikethrough]] child! The Cask was finally filled - Esquimaux paid off by a hand of tobacco to each - Dog fights numerous. Snow-storm commenced - dark when we started for home. My position on the bow ^[[to look for course & reefs.]] Our course by guess--when 1/2 out overtaken "Kujune" returning to the "North Village" in his Kyack - Just beginning to see the ghostly ^[[masts]] of the G.H.! A lantern at length hung up in the rigging of the G.H. An excellent light house. One bright spot has Saved many a gallant ship & crew! Got back at 5 1/2 having been but 1/2 hour coming. Kujesse ^[[& his crew]] had preceeded us down.
Nuk-er-ton "Buckeye" taken as the 2nd living wife of Charley.

Officers & men often say: "Never will be caught up here again - it is the worst hole ^[[(Country)]] in the world - States prison [[strikethrough]] preferable [[/strikethrough]] preferable to living here even one year. How true that while men are successful they are contented,- otherwise, [[underline]] otherwise! [[/underline]]
