[[strikethrough]] Gave me [[/strikethrough]] given me by Gov. Elbing & Mrs. Kjer. These contain illustrations of the Esquimaux of "East-Land" as the Esquimaux here always term Greenland.
Tou-lee-tou, on learning that the "Innuits" of East Land could read & write - & that these books were made by them was more anxious then ever to learn [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] to read & write. I set her copies of "[[pot?]] books & travels", & gave her my ^[[favorite]] gold pen with which I do all my writing (thanks ^[[for it]] to the noble donor ^[[my friend]] Robinson). Tou-lee-tou [[strikethrough]] succeeding [[/strikethrough]] succeeded admirably. I then tried her ^[[in]] A.B.C's The Alphabet (Capital letters) were at her tongue's end; but not so with the [[underlined]] "lower-case" [[/underlined]] as the printer's term it. The pronunciation of a word after spelling appeared a funny affair to T. I would get her to [[strikethrough]] follow [[/strikethrough]] name over each letter of a word - & then ask her to pronounce it. This she could not. I done it for her [[strikethrough]] yet [[/strikethrough]] having her repeat it after me. I then told her that I would read & she should follow the movements of my pen that would point at each word as I read them. After reading 1/2 a page of an octave [[strikethrough]] [[book]] [[/strikethrough]] she looked at me & said: O that I could read! Can I learn to read so? I replied: 'Certainly you can & that soon too by proper assistance. [[strikethrough]] in learning. [[/strikethrough]] Her whole countenance beamed with joy at this. At 2 o'clock Er-boun-bing came ^[[down to the cabin]] [[strikethrough]] & [[/strikethrough]] announced that the Oo mia was ready - that they must go. Bidding us 'Good bye' away they went to "luna". Soon after 2 oclk the ^[[2 cruising]] Boats came in. At 4 one of the water Boats were seen plunging through the "White Caps" headed for the G.H. The truth is, they had a hard fight of it to get along side us they did ^[["Shikes" who was one of the party said: "It was [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] awful! They will experience Esquimaux Hospitality which will be abundant for all [[strikethrough]] their [[/strikethrough]] comforts!
