That whalers would be well paid if they would but visit Fox Channel & then cruise [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough]] I labored last winter to convince Chapell of the House Williams & House [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] of New London this was the place by all means for [[strikethrough]] lisen to [[/strikethrough]] them to send their ships this year. I told him I was convinced that a channel less from Horne bay on other point on Davis [[strike through]] Strait [[/strikethrough]] down into Fox Channel - & that this channel was the great highway for whales. My conclusions of the existence of said channel are found be in accordance with what I am now told by some of the Esquimaux who tell me there is a great water through which Innuits (Esquimaux) pass from [[strikethrough]] Radler [[/strikethrough]] Horne Bay over to a point South of Igloolik! This passage is much every year in OO-mi-as (Women's boots). The ^[[considerable]] rise & fall of tides - ^[[at Repulse Bay & head of Southampton Isle]] - the flood coming from the N. [[strikethrough]] have [[/strikethrough]]convinced me years ago that this channel existed.[[strikethrough]] Certain [[/strikethrough]] The strait of Fury & Hecla at [[strikethrough]] is[[/strikethrough]] ^[[its]] Eastern Terminus is not of sufficient capacity to allow the passage of waters that would account for [[strikethrough]] this [[/strikethrough]] the phenomena. Parry's examination of the tides at said strait in 1822-23 was to- account for the flood tide from the N. at Repulse Bay &c &c

The Water Boat returned at 1 3/4 oclk PM. It was a crew of lady (?) Esquimaux under the command of Smith. The fact may be told that with this crew he has accomplished the work sooner than with the [[strikethrough]] v [[/strikethrough]] men either White or Esquimaux. Just before they arrived at the G.H. I called to Sterry who was below to know if his gun was loaded?- He answered Aye. Then said I hasten up for here is game. Up he came but the Nouryen which ^[[a moment before]] was [[strikethrough]] following expectantly [[/strikethrough]] riding so prettily on the bosom of the still waters just astern the vessel, was now on the wing. But it simply a circuit around the vessel [[strikethrough]] Confone [[/strikethrough]] when it dropped to the Same spot again. Buny! & Nouryen was fluttering. [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] Apparently [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] ^[[a]] wing had been broken. It managed to make its way upon a piece of ice that was floating where it rode ^[[along]] [[strikethrough]] cruding [[/strikethrough]] gradually as the tide ebbed. I felt a regret for my having called Sterry for here was one of God's Creatures suffering for naught. Soon as Smith's boat was discharged of its water cash, Stenny at my request took it & with said "burly" Crew proceeded to obtain the game which was now far away. Not only was this beautiful white bird in the Boat when they came along side but also a new "Birch-Beam" which some of crew had lost overboard considerable blowing of some of the men got from Mate Rogers for this act of casting into [[strikethrough]] n[[/strikethrough]] the sea this besom! Sterry (for I saw him in the distance) cut up many fantastic tricks with his boat attempting to [[strikethrough]] aft Merphy [[/strikethrough]] catch discendler sea-bird! Round [& round went the boat till finally one of the [[strikethrough]] a[[/strikethrough]] "ladies" caught of a stitck which was in the Boat and gave it a throw which found a better shot than Stenny's tho he is a crack shot for it completely stunned it thus enabling him to capture it.
Just at dark Capt. B. cried out Steward! What are you going to have for supper- by & by isn't supper most ready? It was then about 4 o'clock. Steward answered: Can have supper soon if you wish it - am calculating to have same "old story". Let us have some [[underline]] "Sausages" [[/underline]] for a Change! I suppose they'll not last long - Shant want them when they [[strikethrough]] is [[/strikethrough]] are gone on if we do, can't have them - So let us have Sausages to-night! The way spoken - the attendant circumstances make the matter rich! - "It brought down the house." The fact may be told that the sausages we have on board G.H. are just up as preserved meats and are excellent eating as good as we would get in home markets. We have assorted preserved meats, vegetables, and fruits which are great luxuries when brought upon the table as they are now and then.

Capt Budingron met "Joe" (E-birn-bing) the noble Esquimaux who has seen the Queen of Eng. [underline] & many other notable sights [/underline], on deck to-day & said to him:'Well you I do'nt know what Im going to do- no Og-bigs here I shall be afraid to go home without [[strikethrough]] any [[/strikethrough]] more oil! [[underline]] "Can't help it! [[/underline]] was the laconic & deeply sensible reply - especially for an Esquimaux. I do not thing White man could have done better. The Esquimaux women of the upper village are gathering Kelp. They use ^[[it for food.]]
