Danish Interpreter, who has been employed by various Expeditions in search of Sir John Franklin - 1st by Capt. Renny 1850 - 1 (2d by Dr Kane 1853 - 4 & 5 - 3d by Capt (now Sir [[strikethrough]] Rodrick [[/strikethrough]] ^[[Leopold]] ) McClintock 1857 - 8 & 9.
Tou-le-tou, I had [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] no doubt, will readily accomplish the differences in the Language between the Innuits of Boothia Felix & her own people around this section of the country. The pronunciation of the same words by Esquimaux living at a consider^[[able]] [[strikethrough]] ble [[/strikethrough]] distance from each other & having little [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] intercourse is so different that it is with great difficulty they understand each other on coming together. I should judge, from the very great difference in the language between Greenland Esquimaux & the ^[[natives]] West side of Davis Strait, that Petersen was of but little service to McClintock as an Esquimaux Interpreter This conclusion would be arrived at by any one reading the Narrative of [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] McC. [[strikethrough]] where [[/strikethrough]] ^[[where]] interviews were had with the natives on King W Land. Greenlanders (Esquimaux) have a mixed [[strikethrough]] language [[/strikethrough]] language consisting of [[underlined]] Danish & Esquimaux. [[/underlined]]
Capt. Budington, who can, talk fluently ^[[Esquimaux]] with the Esqui this side, found it impossible to [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] be understood by the Greenlanders until he learned [[underlined]] their [[/underlined]] ^[[mixed]] language. Even the intercourse of the Whalers with the Exquimaux around Northumberland Inlet have introduced many words among them (Esqi) that are adopted by them & now are in constant use.
Touletou [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] to-day informed me that the words pik-a-nin-y (for young) Cooney (for wife) pussy (for Seal) ^[[Husky [[strikethrough]] Innuit [[/strikethrough]] for Innuit)]] Smoke-tate (for pipe) [[strikethrough]] ^[[Husky (for Eskimo)]] & many others are not Esquimaux, though in use by them. I now complete the tutpik interview - Before I was aware of it, Tou-le-tou had the tea-kettle over the friendly lamp & the water boiling. She asked me: If I drank tea? Imagine my surprise at this, the question coming from an Esquimaux in an Esquimaux Tent! I replied: ^[[I do, but]] [[?]] have not tea [[underlined]] here [[/underlined]] have you? [[strikethrough]] Putting [[/strikethrough]] Drawing her hand forth from a little [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] ^[[tin]] box, she displayed [[strikethrough]] her ^[[ [[?]] it]] hand [[/strikethrough]] full of fine flavored, Black tea, saying: 'Do you like your tea strong? Thinking to share her the use ^[[for me]] of much of this precious article, away [[strikethrough]] here [[/strikethrough]] up here, far from civilization,

I replied: Ill take it [[underlined]] weak. [[/underlined]] if you please. an excellent bowl [[strikethrough]] s [[/strikethrough]] of ^[[hot]] tea was ^[[soon]] before [[strikethrough]] me [[/strikethrough]] me. [[underlined]] Capital [[/underlined]] tea - & [[underlined]] Capitally [[/underlined]] made! Taking a sea biscuit from my pocket, which I had brought from the vessel for my dinner, I shared it with Tou-le-tou. Seeing she had but one ^[[cup]] [[strikethrough]] bowl [[/strikethrough]] I induced her to participate [[strikethrough]] f[[?]] [[/strikethrough]] with me its contents. There amid the snows of the North ^[[during a terrible NE snow storm]] - under an Esquimaux's hospitable tent, [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] in company with Esquimaux, for the 1st time, shared with them that cheering, soothing [[underlined]] invigorating [[/underlined]] emblem of civilization - T-E-A!
Tou-le-tou says: she & Ebirnbing drink it nearly every night & morning. They acquired a l[[?]] for it in England & ^[[now get their [[?]] it]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] supply [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] ^[[annually]] [[strikethrough]] long that English Whalers & [[/strikethrough]] ^[[ [of the]] American & English Whalers.
By the by, Tou-le-tou said to me ^[[ [during this entertainment]] : I feel very sorry to say that many of the Whaling people are very - bad - making the Innuits ^[[(Esquimaux)]] bad too! - they [[strikethrough]] sw[[?]] [[/strikethrough]] swear [[underlined]] very ^[[much]] [[/underlined]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] & [[underlined]] make our people swear [[/underlined]] [[strikethrough]] Too! much! [[/strikethrough]] [[underlined]] I wish they would not do it! [[/underlined]] American Sailors swear [[underlined]] a great deal! more. & worse [[/underlined]] than the English. I wish no ^[[one]] [[strikethrough]] body [[/strikethrough]] would swear. [[underlined]] It is a very bad practise, [[/underlined]] I believe!
How think you, beloved Americans, I felt with these hot coals on [[underlined]] my head? [[/underlined]] O, that every swearing man could have seen & heard ^[[that} Esquimaux Woman as she spoke this. I had just returned from a hard encounter with ^[[deep]] snows ^[[ [[strikethrough]][ [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] [falling snow [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] driven by]] almost a hurricane but O God! give ^[[me]] a thousand just such [[underlined]] worse if they ^[[ [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] encounters]] [[/strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] can be [[/underlined]] rather than have the like [[underlined]] thunderings [[/underlined]] in my ears again! [[strikethrough]] Me [[/strikethrough]] Her words - her looks - her voice - her [[strikethrough]] very [[/strikethrough]] ^[[ [tears are]] in my ^[[ [very soul]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] still! One of the Iron daughters of the Eternal Snows of the North, standing [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] like an angel pleading the [[underlined]] cause [[/underlined]] of the [[underlined]] True God. [[/underlined]] Weeping for the sad havoc made & [[underlined]] making [[/underlined]] among [[underlined]] her [[/underlined]] people by those of [[underlined]] my [[/underlined]] countrymen who [[underlined]] should have ^[[been]] ^[[& ever should]] be [[/underlined]] glorious representatives of Freedom, Civilization [[strikethrough]] & [[/strikethrough]] Christianity! It was too much - I was a child. I confess that I blushed for this stain upon my country & honor - not only this, but for the wickedness diffused almost throughout [[strikethrough]] ^[[almost]] [[/strikethrough]] the [[underlined]] unenlightened World [[/underlined[]] by the instrumentality of Whalers hailing from all Civilized Lands! [[strikethrough]] There are expeditions to [[/strikethrough]]
