This I am ready to admit, that [[strikethrough]] sa [[/strikethrough]] some commanders [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] some officers & some crews of Whaling Ships are as they should be - Exemplary men - men who take pleasure in doing good [[underlined]] wherever they are [[/underlined]] - who seek to extend the [[strikethrough]] benefits [[/strikethrough]] bounds of civilization, planting [[strikethrough]] h[[?]] [[/strikethrough]] philanthropic & Christian Institutions where Darkness & Ignorance had before reigned universal! Being now ready to ^[[return]]
At three o'clock, Ebiernbing kindly gathered a crew from among his Esquimaux friends to carry me aboard. Much [[strikethrough]] ( [[/strikethrough]] Seko (ice) [[/strikethrough]] lug [[/strikethrough]] had set in to the cave causing me much ^[[trouble &]] delay to [[strikethrough]] & trouble [[/strikethrough]] get out. Once out, a fair way lay before us - a few strokes brought us along side.

At V this Morning, going on deck, I was delighted to see "Capella" & "Menkaline", [[strikethrough]] the [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] though ^[[only]] dimly. No stars before for [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] several nights. The sight of these was limited to less than 1/2 minute. No Sun or Stars now a days & ^[[now,]] a nights. This afternoon for a moment, Sun-shine was seen on the distant mountain. Ebiernbing & Tou-le-tou ^[[have]][[strikethrough]] have [[/strikethrough]] been aboard to-day. ^[[When they made their 1st call]]
They were by their way to the Upper Village [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[?]] accompanied by My[[?]] & his nulianas. Tou-le-tou came into the

Commander's [[strikethrough]] ^[[& my]] [[/strikethrough]] Cabin seated herself on the Locker & commenced to show me her progress in spelling. Words of 2 letters that [[strikethrough]] her [[/strikethrough]] ^[[she]] read yesterday are at her tongue's end. Having taken down a book from my Arctic Library, I told her to [[strikethrough]] pick [[/strikethrough]] show me the words "me", - "up", "go", "as", "so" etc. etc. She readily done this.
Toward night she & Ebiernbing returned - I took lessons in Esquimaux. Ebirnbing agrees ^[[that]] he will bring her aboard every two or three days to take lessons in reading. During the day, I selected a present of various colored beads for Tou-le-tou ^[[who]] [[strikethrough]] when [[/strikethrough]] I found had none I also presented to her an Ood-lo (woman's knife) The parents of ^[[a]] very pretty appearing little girl [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] about of 7 years of age, comes aboard to-day. They wanted I should [[strikethrough]] give [[/strikethrough]] send [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] their ^[[little]] daughter some hair rings ^[[that is brass rings for keeping up [her ]] wh of course I did. So modest & beautiful a child prompted me to call it mine when I first saw it, some months ago. Advantage is taken of this by the parent's [[?]] ^[[in [[strikethrough]] by [[/strikethrough]] ]] crying "Piletay" eve[[?]] time I see them, declaring I shall have the child whenever old enough, for my nuliana!
What should I do but respond liberally to such magnanimous an offer? Esquimaux are Esquimaux ^[[they seem determined to make me]]
At VII O'clock this eve, the "George Henry" men were all a fire! Keeney came jumping down from deck crying: "A Whale has just been heard to blow ^[[out near the bow,]] three or four times! This was enough. The "dark as Egypt", a rush was made for the deck. Smith roared out as he was fastening on his sea-boots - I feel fish-y as the [[?]] - l. I wish I could get fast to him to-night. I'd run him high & dry here in the rocks & let him sweat ^[[there]] till morning. Some one said to Smith - "Where
