I prepared the medicine which she took in good [[insertion]] & full [[/insertion]] faith that it would do her good. We spent an hour here relieving the distressed as much as was in our power. I gave her [[insertion]] some of the "Jelly" which was duly praised by [[insertion]] the maker [[/insertion]] [[/insertion]]
His Igloo is occupied also by Chimeraschen[[guess]] ("Johnny Bull") & Kok-er-zhun, his nuliana - daughter of [[insertion]] the deceased [[/insertion]] "Cudlargo" & by little Kim-ni-lu [[insertion]] only other child [[/insertion]] the younger daughter of the same noble but lamented Esquimaux. [[insertion]] From here [[/insertion]] I departed feeling within my soul [[strikethrough]] as if [[/strikethrough]] I had done an act that gave me more pleasure than pen can [[insertion]] now start to [[/insertion]] describe. There was a [[underlined]] Self [[/underlined]]- Satisfaction about it - a moniton[[guess]] within which said:
"To thine own self be true,
And it will follow as [[insertion]] the [[/insertion]] night the day,
Thou canst not be false to any man."
Nu Ker tum[[guess]] again, & again returned her thanks to me [[strikethrough]] by [[/strikethrough]] saying: "Que-en-e-mik & Que-en-e-mik" I thank you, I thank you." I told her I would try & call again to-day - & then to-morrow too.
This seemed to give her joy. I have before recorded the known kindly nature of K^[[n]]uk-er-tou. How willing she was to do anything for any one of the Ship's company without money - aye & without price. [[underlined]] So long as she could do, so long she did do [[/underlined]] - doing much in a brief space of time. So soon as sickness & distress overtak^[[e]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] her, where is she?. Who are her friends? Alas, for humanitie's sake [[insertion]] where are her friends either [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] both [[/strikethrough]] among her own people [[strikethrough]] & [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] or [[/insertion]] of the G.H.'s [[insertion]] men [[/insertion]] So far as the Commander of this vessel is concerned, no call for aid to the [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] helpless [[insertion]] no cry for [[/insertion]] relief to the sick - [[insertion]] no prayer for [[/insertion]] food for those who hunger reach his ear, but [[strikethrough]] to [[/strikethrough]] [[insertion]] he [[/insertion]] responds with a heart as big as an angel's! To-day, when I told him of the situation of Nuk-er-tou - of my [[proposed?]] visit all that was required to relieve the sick was at once cheerfully bestowed by him. I have watched with a careful eye the [[underlined]] "make" [[/underlined]] of Capt. S.O. Budington. He who looks to find perfection among mortals is looking for [[underlined]] what is not [[/underlined]] but they who are looking for one who [[insertion]] in secret [[/insertion]] scatters broadcast blessings - blessings that are blessings now

blessings that will rise up here & there, hereafter, [[strikethrough]] will find n[[?]] [[/striketrough]] [[need?]] but to be directed to the present commander of this vessel.
From Nuketou's [[strikethrough]] side [[/strikethrough]] Igloo I turned my steps to others, calling into all to see if sickness was to [[insertion]] be [[/insertion]] found & relieved. None was found; then with "Captain", (the young Esquimaux) as my companion I took a Sabbath walk to meditate & worship among the distant snow clad hills. During my prolonged stay, I saw many "Nawgers" flying toward an open Channel where they alighted [[strikethrough]] floating among [[/strikethrough]] in quest of their sea-food. A remarkable sight [[insertion]] for these regions [[/insertion]] at this Season of the year (2d Day of Dec.) [[strikethrough]] A [[/strikethrough]] The [[insertion]] curious [[/insertion]] Echo over this channel - so remarkable that the three Esquimaux dogs [[insertion]] & boy [[/insertion]] close by me, could not hear my voice except through the Echo! The tide was out, leaving a high bank on opposite side of channel which reverberated the sound. After speaking in one second the Echo came to us, making the distance across just 550 feet sound travelling about 1100 feet per second. A novel way to me to measure distances! While at the farther end of the island, heard the shrill Esquimaux call for me "Coppatan". At length, saw a company of Esquimaux (4) crossing a distance up the channel on the ice toward the upper village, constantly calling to us. We responded when they informed us that Myar & his crew were in wait for me - to convey me aboard the vessel. I may here remark that no sooner had I paid my [[insertion]] morning [[/insertion]] visit to Nukertou than 1/2 the village ladies volunteered to convey me in a boat to the vessel. The husbands were all off, some sealing but mostly aboard the G.H. These Esquimaux ladies were solicitous of an excuse for going aboard, therefore their anxiety to have the priviledge of conveying me. I did not deem it judicious to gratify them in this, therefore I took my proposed walk. The devices to get me to go to the "George Henry" by the various parties I could [[?]]
