1860 Monday Dec 24

VI A.M.
A clear beautiful Morning! The Aurora at play N.E. - W & N.W. in scattering but long beams.
Took a look at Jupiter's Satellites. All 4 in View - #3 & #4 at the East of it - #1 & #2 W.
The latter 2 were quite near [[symbol: Jupiter]], but the former were more distinct. Capt. B. could distinguish with his "naked eyes" #3 & #4 which is extraordinary. It is with care that I can see the same with my telescope.

To-day I must survey this Harbor - Thermometer standing at +16[[degree symbol]]; Bar. 30.275 Weather gloriously pleasant. Wind but just perceptable - from the N. The Aurora visible in the W. to 8 oclk AM.

[[underlined]] Christmas Eve! [[/underlined]]

This the anniversary of the Birth of "The Prince of Peace".
"The same night shepherds who were watching their flocks - saw a great light & heard a multitude of angels singing & giving glory to God because the Savior was born" - the same night certain wise men in the East

Christmas Eve

saw a bright star - they followed the star - & found the child Jesus and worshipped him. 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.'
"Hosannah to King David's Son, who reigns on a superior throne!
We bless the Prince of heavonly birth who brings salvation down to earth".
"Let [[underlined]] every nation, [[/underlined]] every age, in this delightful work engage!
Old men & babes in Zion sing
The growing glories of her King".

The early part of this eve, I spent among the Igloos - snow houses - of the Esquimaux. I have told some of the natives, as best I could, the glorious Event all should commemorate which occured 1861 years ago in Bethlehem [[strikethrough]] which ocured occured [[/strikethrough]] in an [[underlined]] humble [[/underlined]] place, not incomparable with that of their own habitations! The interest felt by them in my narration of the subject done my heart good. O, that my countrymen would see to it that this people have offered to them the means whereby they can learn all about this matter. Will it not yet be done? The field is a good one - a frigid country indeed, but [[underlined]] warm & noble [[/underlined]] hearts are here as in any part of God's Earth. A truth that needs to be known.
