I have just returned from deck where I've been to give a parting gun to the Old Year & a welcoming salute to the New! Two guns down the companion way aft [[strikethrough]] Aft [[/strikethrough]] & 2 of some signification forward. By the aid of gun powder, I have spoken my sentiments: I wish you all a Happy New Year! As I come down into the cabin, the Captain speaks from his birth: 'I wish you Happy New Year - Hall, - does'nt it smell confounded bad here? I answered: I thank you, I wish you many - As to the smell, that's simply from the gun-powder I've just burnt to greet you all with hearty wishes: 'Happy-thrice happy be [[strikethrough]] to the [[/strikethrough]] this New Year!' Capt. B. arises - goes on deck - comes down - unlocks the run - draws forth a lb. of fresh Beef - preserved - sits it on my little table - We [[strikethrough]] take a [[/strikethrough]] together moderately "splice [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] the Main Brace" - he turns in, while I eat & write - Write & eat - & so on to the end of the night. Thermometer one degree below "0" - Bar 29.200 A Calm - Cloudy - but the moon now & then perceptable. Panlooyer (Blind George) & his little Koo-koo-yer I put to bed last night with the kindly assistance of Capt. B. covering them with my opera cloak. [[strikethrough]] Kimilu [[/strikethrough]] Kimmulu I put into my sleeping bag & placed her on a Sea Chest with her head pillowed in an old arm chair. The 2 brothers in Law (?) of Que-jesse [[strikethrough]] slept [[/strikethrough]] are sleeping each on a Sea-chest - the Steward on one also. Que-jes-se & Tu-nuk-de-lien in my birth dreaming no doubt of roaming mountains covered with Tuk-too. [[/left margin red bracket]]
