[[boxed]] 1861 Jan 3d Thurs. [[/boxed]] & to obtain some fresh seal for the dogs if possible. XI oclk All we ^[[(Quejesse & I)]] started with 4 dogs - 3 of my Greenlanders & one ^[[ [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] Esquimaux]] belonging to a native of N.S.V. The 4th dog proved a regular mule - stubborn & somewhat ^[[as a man [[strikethrough]] who [[/strikethrough]] feeling]] [[underlined]] devilish. [[/underlined]] The Kom-moo-tik ^[[sledge]] was new & heavy. It is one of 2 made for the use of the G H [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] the coming Spring to transport the Boats from here to Frobisher Bay. (My sledge is not yet shod) The snow proved itself of a hugging, singing nature thus [[strikethrough]] remaining a less frick [[/strikethrough]] causing friction to the sledge. The sledge is shod with the jaw-bone of the Whale When worn down a little will prove an excellent [[strikethrough]] an [[/strikrthrough]] anti-friction material. I know ^[[not]] when I have had my sides so shaken with laughter as to-day. When I state the [[underlined]] cause, [[/underlined]] some might grin & say: instead of laughing I should have been a-crying. Indeed I should have wept or, at least, [[underlined]] "protested". [[/underlined]] But as it was, I did not, so I must state facts [[strikethrough and underlined]] as it was [[/strikethrough and underlined]] on arriving within 3/4 of a mile met 2 of my dogs (Barke karke & Menok) & several of the dogs belonging to upper village. Of course, we made reasonable additions to our team, not hesitating ^[[in]] [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] placing any dogs we could lay our hands to to the task. It was an unreasonable time we took in going up to said village taking into thought ^[[that]] ordinary circumstances surrounded us. But extraordinary being our condition, of course extraordinary events happened. The ^[[dogs]] circling around [[end page]] [[start page [[boxed]] 1861 Jan 3d Thurs. Enter at once the Igloo of my particular friends, Koo-an-chu (Sampson) & Nu-or-che. Welcomed - warmly welcomed by Nu-e-le-ong & Archunyneyer[[guess]] ^[[their]] wives. [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] How kindly is the treatment of the Innuits to me. I never expected so joyous moments as I have experienced in various Igloos of the Innuits! Most noble hearts have they in many respects. I proceeded to my business - endeavored to [[strikethrough]] by [[/strikethrough]] trade some [[strikethrough]] Sal [[/strikethrough]] Seal - [[underlined]] they had none.
