1861 Jan 8th Thursday

has been at work to day on my sledge which I brought from the States putting slabs of the jaw-bone of a Whale as Shoeing. 

Yesterday a Seal was caught by one of the North Star Villagers, Kar-ne-ar, (Sharkey) 
Tuk-oo-li-too has new winter dress of Tuk-too! Stopping with me during the day - The direct & palpable good talk with Capt. B. while reclining in his birth - the good reception & his kind consideration of subjects I brought before him.

Wednesday Jan 9th 1861

This morning Ugarny who arrived here Eve of Saturday last started back to Oo-kood-lear being accompanied by the thrible named Innuit Ang-yer-shuny (1) Er-Ker-puny (2) Jack (3) & his (Jack's) nuliana OO-Ker-ling-un & nu-tar-ung (child) Oo-wou-ard-loo.

The Kum-mi-ti (sledge) was driven by only 5 dogs.  It was loaded by all of this World's goods of Jack.  Of course the human freight was confined to simply the child.  All preparation is made for my small party to start to-morrow - I to call up Ebierbing at 4 o'clock AM
I am very busily engaged completing preparations!

First Night in an Igloo! (Snow House)
Thursday, Jan 10, 1861

Started this Morning [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] for Oo-Kood-lear, a place some 25 miles North of [[strikethrough]] this place [[/strikethrough]] the vessel  - Thermometer standing 30 below Zero - 62[[degree symbol]] below freezing point!  My company consists of Self, Ebierbing, Tuk-oo-li-too & Kood-loo cousin of the deceased Nuk-er-ton, the latter accompanying for the object of bringing back the Kummiti & dogs that he may bring his family & things to same place, Oo-Kood-lear.

By 4 O'clk AM I was up - & with lantern in hand went over according to arrangement & called Ebierbing & Tuk-oo-li-too.  They awoke & proceededed at once packing up whatever things they would require during our stay wh. as yet is undetermined - may be 30 days - perhaps 90?  I returned to the Oo-mi-en & hastened packing up.  Que-jes-se, who expects soon to follow with his nuliana, proceeded to the upper village for my dog harnesses wh. he had left there on his return from Frobisher Bay.  Capt B. ordered supplies for me in way of provision wh. I soon deposited in my Carpet Sack.  The provision issued to me consisted (say to approximate) 1 1/2 lb preserved boiled Mutton in cans 3 lbs raw Salt pork - 15 Cakes Sea bread 1/4 lb pepper - 2 lbs ground burnt coffee 1 qt Molasses - 1 qt.
