ordered Ugarny to be supplied with [[strikethrough]] have [[/strikethrough]] a bowl of it, too, dealing out a portion of my own to make it up! I told him he must go & let Nik-u-jar (sick Polly) & Menoun (the infant) share it with him.

Accordingly he left with that very food for which (& others I feel often forced to give) I am growing poor. How many shared Ugarny's bowl of rice, I do not pretend to name. This much: - He has 3 wives; an aged Mother, an infant; Blind Georges & Polly's Koo-Koo-yer; a niece, Oo-kood-lear; & a nephew - all in his Igloo. Whether [[underlined]] one [[/underlined]] or all shared I leave others to [[underlined]] guess! [[/underlined]]

No food, save a little whale beef & seal blood (enough for one soup for [[underlined]] us [[/underlined]]) remains in any of the Igloos. Ook-sook all gone except [[strikethrough]] save [[/strikethrough]] one day's burning. A strange people are the Innuits. Whenever a Seal is brought in, [[underlined]] a Feast first! [[/underlined]] Whatever may happen to remain is eaten as if a year's supply was on hand. There is nothing like economy in eating. [[underlined]] They go the: Whole Seal or none! [[/underlined]]

This night - or rather evening has been very pleasantly spent in a continued, free conversation with Ebierbing & Tuk-oo-li-too. The Angeko - his evil intent - The sickness of Ebierbing last winter near "Scurvy Bay" - the instructions of Ugarny to his wives - their refusal of [[strikethrough]] list [[/strikethrough]] obeying in his absence - their inhumanity - the injunctions of Ebierbing's father to him (E) when a boy - his remembrance of them - his [[strikethrough]] action [[/strikethrough]] (E's) deeds an exemplication of it. The instruction received by Tuk-oo-li-too from her Mother

Saturday, Feb 9th 1861

This Eve The Gale & Snow are becoming less severe in their terrific Work!

At 3 1/2 o'clock P.M. Ugarny & Ebierbing started out with their dogs to see if they could not find each a Seal hole ere dark

Ebierbing returned 2 hours after starting out his dogs having found & [[underlined]] disturbed [[/underlined]] a Seal-hole. The displacement of any part of a Seal-hole even snow over it - destroys it completely for any successful attempts to capture a Seal therefrom. Ugarny has found a hole over which he intends to remain this night long if necessary. This fact we know by his dogs having returned. After a Seal hole is found no longer
