1861 Mon Mar. 4 looked in the ship's medicine chest of wh. (of course) he has full charge being a Capital & and the only M.D. aboard. - Could find no bottle or vial there void. He finally [[strikethrough] dres [[/strikethrough]] drew forth a 4 sided vial half filled with that kind of brown looking powder the use of wh. in his practice added so much to the successfull career of the celebrated Helvetius (of Europe) in time of Louis XIV who rewarded him (H) with a [[symbol: British Pound]] 1.000 present - I mean [[underlined]] "Ipecacuanha" [[/underlined]] the active principle of wh. is alkaloid called [[underlined]] Emetine. [[/underlined]] The vial was only 3/4 in square & 4 inches high. Thinking perhaps I might (tho' I hoped not) want some of this I asked Capt. B. if he had more of it He replied: 'Yes two bushels left - at least enough Emetics for all the world awhile!' The Little Bottle with aforesaid in it was soon swing by its "neck" at yard arm. A 1/2 score competitors on deck - one fired - then another as Capt. B. called them out. Now Morgan appeared. Capt B. distracted him. Said he: 'Morgan you have your gun loaded with Buck (usual charge "Buck" & or small Balls) (the understanding was to shoot single ball) 'No, I haven't Captain', was his reply casting up his eyes with a very innocent (?) countenance! Now Morgan, I think you have continued Capt. B. but if not fire away'! Morgan pulled trigger - cap went off but gun did'nt! Another & another trial but with no better success - Stand aside Morgan let another follow you' said Capt B. Have all done? No one had hit the swinging mark. Capt B. says now let me try. Crack went my Rifle - Cold lead [[strikethrough]] show [[/strikethrough]] made "a thousand & one" fragments of the little bottle [[strikethrough]] scattering [[/strikethrough]] using [[underlined]] Ipecacuanha [[/underlined]] quite out of the "usual or regular practice"! [[/underlined]] I think not a man but felt a degree of thankfulness (some more than others) for that noble creature of God - "Barbekark", through whose instrumentality we have all been able to regale on fresh Venison Steaks. The meat is delicious - the tenderest, it appears to me, I ever ate. Twenty minutes before V P.M. Sharkey with Kummiti & dogs accompanied by one of Angeko's wives made his appearance [[strikethrough]] from [[/strikethrough]] in the direction we crossed over the ice after having made it from the land passage. The signal given by - some one of the hands from deck crying: C-h-i-m-o! Ch-i-m-o!! called all of us to see what was up.
