1861 Sat. Mar 16

eyes.  About 45[[degree symbol]] from the southern horizon [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] the centre of the bow or arch of Auroral light was elevated while the extremities rested near the Wn. & Eastern horizon.

Higher - & higher this bridge of beauty was lifted - All at once, it flashed out into inconceivable appearances - here & there like meandering rivers of molten gold - here & there, cornscations of prismatic fire - here & there curtains of light flaunting as it were to the breezes of Heaven.

At the end of 15 minutes the Aurora in its gambolings reached Zenith - there it continued for 10 minutes longer, when [[strikethrough]] as if [[/strikethrough]] in groups of dancing beams it descended the starry road it had mounted.

One strange matter took place while this entertainment was going on.  Though the stars [[strikethrough]] showed [[/strikethrough]] shone out brightly, save the obscuration by the Aurora, a "Snow-shower" took place

Quejesse & Charley not yet returned - 

I noticed the palpable [[strikethrough]] ch [[/strikethrough]] effect the Aurora had to-night on the Magnetic Needle.

Tu-nuk-de-lien (Isabel) Que-jes-se's nuliana, has just come in & informs me that "Jack" ([[space]]) & his wife & child have just arrived from "Budington Bay" reporting that here is nothing to eat up there.  I shall learn more  of this to-morrow & will record the facts that

I may draw out of Jack.

I think, however, that Jack finds he cannot longer live off of the laborous work of others (that is [[strikethrough]] that [[/strikethrough]] the hard workers refuse to support the lazy fellow "Jack" any longer). It will be recollected that I stated in my journal, while spending my 40 [[strikethrough]] & odd da [/strikethrough]] days (& over) from the vessel, that "Jack" was an indifferent worker - that he & his family lived mostly by the generosity of my valued friends, Ebierbing & Tuk-oo-li-too. - But after all Jack is a great Worker (?) but with his teeth only!
