1861 Mon Apr 8

This PM the party of the G.H. wh. left last [[symbol: Cross]] for Frobisher Bay settlement returned. This party of (8) went over for the object of trading for Walrus meat the article of trade being to-bacco. They were accompanied by "Sharkey" the father (Innuit) of a White man's child by his (S.) Innuit wife. The intention was to bring back all the meat they could "shoulder" - but "Jim Crow" (brother in law of Que-jesse) harnessed up a team of dogs & kindly brought a very large load of Walrus provision over for them.

Of course, fresh meat is our fare now & food for their dogs. To-day we had Venison for dinner.

The above observations from Lat. are not reliable as the glass covering the Mercury of the Artificial Hn. got fast to the sides of the basin.

The Morn unpropitious. Wind & snow driving from N.E. I learn through Capt. B. who has just had it from an intelligent Innuit (Quejesse), that Among the traditionary matter handed down from one generation to another there is this, that many very many years ago some white men built a ship on one of the Islands of Frobisher Bay & away they went.

I think I can see through this in this way. Frobisher in 1578 assembled a good part of his fleet in what he called "Countess of Warwick's Sound" (said to be in the Bay below us) when a council was held on the 1st Aug. at wh. it was determined to send [[underlined]] all persons & things [[/underlined]] on shore upon "Countess of Warwick's Island", & on Aug. 2d orders were proclaimed by several of a transfer for the guidance of the Company during their abode thereon. For reasons stated in [[strikethrough]] his [[/strikethrough]] history the Company did not tarry here long but departed for "Meta Incognita" & thence to Eng.

Now, May not [[underlined]] the fact [[/underlined]] of timbers, chips &c &c having been found on one of the Islands (within a day's journey of here) many years ago, prove that the said materials were of this Frobisher's Co. & that hence the Innuit tradition?

In a few days now, I hope to be exploring Frobisher Bay. I may have something to add of the matter referred to above.
