^[[ [[encircled]] (5) [[/encircled]] ]] [[boxed]] 1861 Apr 23 Tues. [[/boxed]] to work as a charm upon this Monstrous sea-creature. I was greatly interested in this procedure. Miner kept up his peculiar noise which was a mixture of ^[[Innuit]] singing & [[underlined]] bellowing. [[/underlined]] Every few moments he would relax his hold of his gun & make a few careful stokes with the oar then perhaps Ook-guke would make a movement as if to depart - then Sealer would seize his gun aim it - at the same time increasing in [[underlined]] vehemence [[/underlined]] of executing his Seal Song! Ook-guke charmed would desist its movements. Sealer again plies oar - again brings the steel to bear - again & again exchanges one for the other. It appeared that he wished to ^[[be]] [[underlined]] sure [[/underlined]] of his game by having distance between him & it small - very small. At last Seal bu^[[r]]st the [[strikethrough]] thr [[/strikethrough]] silvery Charm ^[[wh. had been around it -]] raised itself quick as thought & made a [[underlined]] plunge [[/underlined]] ere Sealer could bring his gun to bear again. The response that came to our ears ^[[from over the waters]] [[strikethrough]] from the [[/strikethrough]] was the peculiar ejaculation of an Innuit on a sudden disappointment - E-e-e-uk'! A loss of [[strikethrough]] 2 [[/strikethrough]] 1/2 to 2/3 of a ton of fresh provision! Not this alone I ^[[almost]] lost a good opportunity for taking a Meridional observation of the Sun. I was so interestingly engaged in this scene that I forgot my more important duty. As it was, I hastened to the sea ice with my pocket sextant & was just in time (within a minute) of catching the [[symbol: Sun]] on its turning point - Sun's Altitude 39[[degree symbol]] -42[[feet symbol]] - 00[[inch symbol]] [[symbol: Sun]]'s Semi-diam & Px. | +16-8 [[line]] 39-58.08 [[^[[(Small sex)]] Refractive - - - -1-08 [[line]] 39-57-00 [[line]] 5 feet Dip (Sea Horizon) -2-12 Dec. n 12[[degree symbol]] - 37 - 14[[inch symbol]] 39-54-48 [[line]] 90-00-00 [[line]] +4-07 50-05-12 [[line]] Cord Decr n. 12[[degree symbol]] - 41[[feet symbol]] - 21[[inch symbol]] [[line]] (12-41-21 [[line]] Lat. [[/right margin encircled and written vertically]] I returned to the Igloo where was Sterry & then [[strikethrough]] took [[/strikethrough]] ^[[departed for]] a walk on the mountain back of it. On reaching the peak, walked on till I came to a spot covered with many small stone among which I discovered numerous specimens of fossils, gathering here & there one [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] & depositing) ^[[them]] in my geological bag, to wit, mitten! My pursuit of this kind of employment was ere long [[end page]] [[start page]] ^[[ [[encircled]] 6 [[/encircled]] ]] [[boxed]] 1861 Apr. 23 Tues. [[/boxed]] [[strikethrough]] [[?]]ted [[/strikethrough]] suspended by a shout from the peak which I found came from a party of Innuits & Sterry. I hastened to them where I was soon repaid for it. The Innuits to whom I refer were: Kok-er-jab-in & Neitch-e-e-youn(g) both born in Frobisher Bay - the former the widow of deceased Cudlargo - the other [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] (also a widow) with one child. Kok-er-jab-in from this Mountain peak pointed out to me the place of her nativity on the opposite side of Frobisher Bay, a place called: [[strikethrough]] *..... (Kar-mo-wong really an Island) [[/strikethrough]] Kar-mo-won(g) an inlet that makes its way up into the interior of Kin-gaite (Meta Incognita). [[strikethrough]] She [[/strikethrough]] She says that from a high point at the extent of said Inlet or Bay she has often seen the Oo-mi-ens of Kab-loo-nas (Ships of the Hudson Bay Company) pass up, at a later period of the year than now, the Waters which makes up on the other side in the direction of the Bay before us, [[strikethrough]] & return [[/strikethrough]] & seen the same return before the Winter sets in. [[underlined]] This was an [[strikethrough]] interest [[/strikethrough]] interesting fact, [[/underlined]] showing that [[underlined]] "Meta Incognita" [[/underlined]] is a [[underlined]] narrow [[/underlined]] tongue of land thrown out into the Sea by the Hand of the Almighty for some blessed purpose - of a similar character as that between Frobisher Bay & Rescue Bay. Neitch-e-e-youn(g) was born up near the head of Frobisher Bay, but not being so communicative, or so observing in her life as K. I could gain but little from her. From this peak, I took the bearing of the [[strikethrough]] further [[/strikethrough]] furtherest extreme (South) of the land opposite wh. was distinctly visible. Kok-er-jab-in assured me [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[?]] [[?]] land [[/strikethrough]] that [[underlined]] there was no land beyond it in that direction [[/underlined]] - & from her description ^[[it]] consisted of several Islands. Of course the outer or extreme was [[underlined]] RESOLUTION ISLAND [[/underlined]] wh. bore by my Aizmuth Compass 102[[degree symbol]] - wh. is [[underlined]] (true) 16[[degree symbol]] West of South, [[/underlined]] allowing 62[[degree symbol]] Westerly variation. Kar-mo-won(g) bore 67[[degree symbol]] - or [[underlined]] true [[/underlined]] = S. 51[[degree symbol]] W.
