AR-KU-E-SHUK-TE-BING
in the midst of Frobisher Bay - Seal raw - frozen - warm from the late captured subject & seal cooked! This eve the high tide came pouring into Tuk-su & Wad-ling of the Igloo thratning to inundate Igloo & all. I had a desire to watch the hour of the full tribe at the fall of the Moon. Full Moon ^[[by]] [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] Greenwich ^[[time - day &]] h[[?]] 24d - 10-h - 23m - Of course highest rise of tide 36 hours after - & here it was before me in the house (Igloo) by my bed! [[strikethrough]] Thirty [[/strikethrough]] By it I find thirty feet - hour, between VII & VIII! This knowledge was not pursued under difficulty, but rather [[underlined]] came to me [[/underlined]] while [[strikethrough]] so [[/strikethough]] reclining happily on a bed of Tuk-too furs!
The dispatch of Ning-u-ar-bing in [[strikethrough]] e [[/strikethrough]] snatching the skin fur deepes from the sid-lu-^[[ung]] (Wardrobe) in the side of the tuk-su to save them from salt water. The cleaning on everything of the seal skin - the mouth of the lady currier[[guess]] the deposite of the scrapings - the tongue in constant requisition to keep from the scraper - a dish by to receive contents when acquiring a mouthful! The scrapings of board, hands etc all go 1st to mouth & then to dish [[?]]hice to their dogs! The captive of Walrus the line encircling the neck ^[[of the harpooner]] 5 to 10 fathoms long. Wind N.E
I intended last night starting back this Morn, but from the continuation of the Storm the bad looks of the clouds, I must not undertake it. I ^[[a]] favorable change should take place by 11, I may start. If I go, I am to be accompanied by Cap-a-tion Here I find them well supplied with wood from the English Whale Ship wrecked 3 years ago [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] near Bear Sound. The sleep in Sampson's Igloo. Little Puk-e-neg-gar at my feet. My pillow becomes my covering. The Innuit School & I the Master!
The Walrus fresh in the morning - Every resident & non resident furnished with a raw frozen "yunk". The host & hostess Koo-Kin & Kun-ni-u, winga & nuliana. The Beef like piece given me weighed 5 lbs. - frozen & raw & well flanked with Ook-Sook! A funny sight every one [[underlined]] (myself not excepted) [[/underlined]] at work with teeth & jaws upon the huge pieces of Walrus. [[underlined]] It was good! [[/underlined]] The capital dinner at Sampson's Stenny, Kokerkpbin[[guess]] present. The portion of the Seal (it was a [[underlined]] Seal [[/underlined]] dinner) allotted to me & Stenny was the head - We complied with Innuit custom. Stenny would take a "Knaw" - a mouthful - & then pass head to me - I doing the same then pass it back - Of course fingers are all in all - no knives & forks [[strikethrough]] in the [[/strikethrough]] among the people! Fingers are more than their equivalent - When meat skin & hair were all [[strikethrough]] dispatched [[/strikethrough]] dispached - even the eyes save the balls wh of course were given to the [[strikethrough]] youngest [[/strikethrough]] youngest child of "Sampson, we tapped the Brain. I was surprised at the amount of a Seals Brains! & equally so of the [[underlined]] deliciousness [[/underlined]] of them! The scull was almost as thin as paper. Shoot a Seal in the head & [[underlined]] its dead [[/underlined]] - Shoot a Walrus in the head & the [[underlined]] damage [[/underlined]] is to the [[underlined]] Ball [[/underlined]] flattening it completely no injury whatever to the Walrus!
That Seal's head made I & S. a capital dinner We finished on Seal Soup! The hair cutting in Old Seko's Igloo - Stenny the barber - I the subject. The advice of Sampson that I should not venture to start home to-day. The difficulty of getting intelligible answers
