Thursday, June 14/60 IX o'clock eve
This day has been rainy but [[insertion]] not [[/insertion]] [[underlined]] dull [[/underlined]] [[strikethrough]] except [[/strikethrough]] for the excitement of whaling has kept it otherwise. This morning about 8 o'clock: "There she blows" many in my sums - I passed to the bow of the vessel - mounted the buboaske[[guess]] on the port side [[strikethrough]] used from mid point [[/strikethrough]] had in firm view of two whales - [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] "Bottle noses" of the family Delphinnidae - which were within ^[[5 or 6 fathoms]] of me. They were moving leisurely along in the same direction as the vessel nearly under her bow & every 30 seconds would come up & puff - whoo-ey! then descend beneath the water ^[[ [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] ]] about [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] ^[[leaving only few]] feet over their backs. I saw them distinctly, without cessation
