Here, amid mountains robed in snow - in a sea covered with thick ribbed ice - among [[underlined]] a people 'free' as God's own children can be, [[/underlined]] - We celebrate the Birth Day of Our Freedom. Soon after IX last night, all turned in agreeing to be on deck a few minutes before XII Midnight. Sleep stole so heavily upon us that it was one O'Clk A.M. when Morgan came to my birth & called me. A few moments sufficed to find a Company armed & equiped as the law (the G.H's) directs - ready for action. Some of the Company were as they leaped from their blankets - in stocking feet & drawers. Nevertheless, they had willing hands & patriotic hearts - wide mouths & deep toned throats, therefore, [[underlined]] they "passed Muster". [[/underlined]] The signal given by the writer, in voices of thunder we spoke - then following with cheer upon cheer. We had done all this (I write of preparations) [[underlined]] sub rosa [[/underlined]] - that Capt. B. might be aroused from his slumbers, & [[underlined]] rushed into a "celebration". [[/underlined]] On our 1st guns & cheers, he sprang from his Birth & made his appearance on deck completely enveloped
