1861 July 12th Fri. 

4 times at small rope-yarn suspended at Said yard arm.  First shot hit it - 2nd shot cut it in two the weight upon it pendant, dropping down - 3rd shot hit remaining piece rope yarn, 4th shot cut it in two again!  A 5 cent piece is a big mark compared to the ones I have endeavored to describe.

The sun after going behind the mountains on setting, painted the clouds in beautiful red - making a picture worth enjoying.

Capt. B. thinks of starting off & boat's crew to-morrow morn sending [[strikethrough]] them [[/strikethrough]] it with Boat over the ice some 5 miles to open water - thence to proceede down Lupton Channel to Frobisher Bay - Budingtonville - there to turn in with the Company now there in whaling.
