After I had picked up & packed my instruments, I took the glass & looked out seaward - saw to my surprise much pack ice where in the morning we had found clear water but greater was my astonishment when in the distance I saw approaching on the ice Gardner & some of his men. I called ^[[from the Island]] to Capt B. who was on board the ship - he has espied Gardner & the men at same time.
A few minutes after getting aboard Gardner arrived. He reported that when within 5 miles

of the entrance to the channel leading down to Bear Sound he [[strikethrough]] [[?]] [[/strikethrough]] came to solid ice that lined the whole coast on the S. side of the Bay after trying this way & that was obliged to cease further efforts & return.
He left the Boat on a small Island North side entrance to Rescue Bay, two men remaining there for the night while he (G.) Bailey, Ebierbing & 2 others came up. This Morn as the Boat was launched, I thought how rejoiced [[strikethrough]] were [[/strikethrough]] would I be if under so firm auspices I had my craft which was brought from the States, ready with its proper appointments for departure to the point I intended making when I bid adieu to home! But it seems now a question yet to be determined whether we are able to get out of our present quarters the present year. Capt. B. stands it nobly, yet he feels
