(5 1861 July 20 Sat. While over on the Island waiting for [[?]] for N. Obs. to-day I proposed to Tuk-oo-li-too - that as my locks were becoming too long for [[underlined]] "good-looks" [[/underlined]] or convenience - also Whiskers & Mustache that I would have to get her to do what she done for me on the day we were gale-bound in an Igloo on the ice on going up to Oo-Kood-lear last Winter. She done the scissoring as complete as any professional barber of Civilization! To complete my improvements I asked for a tooth-brush which article I knew she had though used for different purpose than the name indicates. I ran out to a place among the rocks where they build daily a fire to cook seal & got some charcoal. With this in the presence of Tuk-oo-li-too & "Suzhy" I proceeded to clean my [[underlined]] blackened [[/underlined]] teeth. Before I began, I displayed them. They were much interested in the operation. - Yennie (Kood loo's wife was sent for - she came & was delighted at my curious work. How astonished the [[underlined]] natives" [[/underlined]] when I had rinsed the dentals & then displayed them! They came out white as snow! Charcoal became article of demand!
