1861 July 31 Wedns makes one forgetful that there is anything like pain in his or her system. As absurd as I & others may think it in this Innuit custom of an-Kooting for the sick yet they think it all right & in fact a necessity. How many of those who live among the lights of Civilization & Christianity would become converts to the [[underlined]] "Religion" [[/underlined]] (so I shall call it for the time being) of the Innuits on seeing the marked improvement of E. soon after Jennie commenced her professional Work? Ebierbing & Tuk-oo-li-too have spent [[strikethrough]] 2 1/2 years [[/strikethrough]] 20 months in Christian England - been in communication for years with Americans & English people yet they appear to be as firm & candid in their people's system of Worship as any can be. I have tried by serious & prolonged talks to show the better, [[underlined]] the proper (as I think) [[/underlined]] way - but still E. & T. think as their ancestors thought, that their way is the better. This people, knowing that I do not make fun of them, or taunt them for believing as they do have confidence in me - therefore I am a priviledged one to their midst whilst [[end page]] [[start page]] 1861 July 31 Wedns. the An-Koot is in the performance of his or her calling. It is against their practice to have any but the family present but I have always had access for the reasons indicated. Let Christianity plant a colony here as it has done in Greenland - & [[underlined]] in time [[/underlined]] this people will become converts to it for [[underlined]] that [[/underlined]] is the only [[underlined]] true [[/underlined]] Religion - & the [[underlined]] Truth [[/underlined]] when properly presented to honest minds will be received with open hearts. No Sealing or Ducking done to-day. Innuits do not prosecute out door Work in bad weather if they can possibly avoid it. "Sharkey" with [[?E-e-u-ar-ping]] got together a company of young Innuits & went over to the ship during a lull of the storm. They will not probably return to-night.
