1861 Aug 6th Tues.

This Morning at low tide I went down to the beach & gathered a quantity of Kelp. It goes good with myself as well as the Innuit family with whom I am stopping. I may say we are living entirely on my Pemmican (cold as it comes out of the can) & my hot coffee & with sea Kelp. The bread I am saving for the Frobisher Bay voyage with the exception of a little wh. I give sick Ebierbing - he eating nothing else. His fever has left him & now I hope to see him recovered very soon.
As I looked over to the vessel to-day (this P.M.) I saw only one boat on the star-board side (the only side to be seen from Whale Island while the wind is in the direction it is). I hardly know what to make of it. There are 4 new Whale Boats only used in whaling 2 on each side of the G.H. hanging to their cranes. Can it be that a Whale has been seen to-day & that pursuit has been made? I shall learn soon of this & will then give the solution.

9th Night in Tupik

During the night the wind - [[underlined]] the Gale [[/underlined]] - ceased & now VII AM it is nearly calm. I have been upon the top of the Island & seen that the lower part of the Bay is packed with broken ice. Its appearance is that if I were ready to start off for Frobisher Bay this Morning it would be impossible to approach Lupton Straits on account of the obstacles in the way to-wit [[underlined]] ice. [[/underlined]] A good Nor Wester will drive it back.
In a few minutes I start off with a crew of Innuits for the vessel - arriving there, I shall have Kood-loo proceede with the Boat & with balance of crew (consisting of lady Innuits) Ducking & Sealing while I confer for a few hours with Capt. B. on the subject of my having the Innuits I desire to carry out my Frobisher Bay exploring voyage. This voyage I must make (D.V.) or I am a disappointed man. I must work for it fearlessly - [[underlined]] courageously. [[/underlined]]
