unfledged Duck caught by Koo-per-neu-ung nooliana now alive aboard, cared for by Tu-nuk-de-lien. One shot by Koo-per-neu-ung - miss. Tu-nuk-de-lien holding the 'duckling' by its back-feathers while it swims! The sight of this orphan (?) duck - its conduct when placed beside its dying mother - its oft opened mouth as if soliciting food from its parent - all in all, enough to soften the stoutest heart - & make it weep! At each gasp of the old duck, fledgling would place its opened bill in contact - anon it would crowd itself beneath (as far as it could) of the old duck & nestle there. Poor thing it knew not of its loss, or destiny.
Another shot by Koo-per-neu-ung - 1 by Koo-jes-se both miss.
As we had no favorable wind & the tide was running too strong to pull against it made for a long Island on west side W. Channel putting into a bight 1/4 mile from main Channel.
Here made following observations
Sylvia Grinnel Island in Rescue Bay near entrance to Lupton Strait carried to the left to Mountain left hand on N. side (Left hand coming from Budingtonville) W Channel Lupton Straits 105°-30' (small sex)
Center Observation Island Mt. to same Mt 110°-50'
Bearing by Az. Compass Sylvia Grinnell Isd 235°
