(6) 1861 Aug 21 Wedns 10th Enc 13th Day the bones of a huge Whale - I tried my best to break off a piece for I found it heavy as stone - pure white where it was not covered with moss. I should think it turned to stone. I finally succeeded in scaling off a bit wh. I have. Much sand from crumbled rocks of the Island here. 3h-55 we reached the small cape distant [[underlined]] one mile on Course [[/underlined]] up [[note]] vide 2 line from bottom of Ante page [[/note]] 347° [[degree symbol]] No uninteresting sight the 2 boats & 2 Ki-as under "Ash Breeze" side by side! Especially so the boat of the accompaning Innuits [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] whom we met yesterday. There are [[underlined]] 14 Souls [[/underlined]] aboard of her the women [[underlined]] manning [[/underlined]] the boats they being generally the oar operators - their raven hair hanging loosely about their head & face - the flashing gold like (tho material is really brass) ornament on their heads - their native dress - their methodical rock to & fro as they ply the oars make all in all a subject worthy of a Picture! h4-m15 Chro. All was abreast the 2 Boats & 2 Ki-as & under competing speed. The flag of Mr Mines of checked red white & blue at the bow of the Boat streaming in the breeze - the glorious ensign of [[end page]] [[start page]] (7) 1861 Aug 21 Wedns my country at the bow of mine made the scene one of interest - & I am sure a novel one for this region! The American Flags now float in a region here never before visited by White Man.
