for a while - but feeling chilly sprung up - leaped the bow & was again walking the Island. Found an Verterbrae of the White Whale & other bones - found relics of Innuits. [[underlined]] No Island or Land [[/underlined]] about here had evidences numerous, tho' uniformly of 'Moss age' of its having been visited by Innuits. There must have been a time years - perhaps Centuries ago - when this people were in great numbers here! Another view from Island-top (where we could see but a mile or less off the tupiks) made us believe there was still a slight prospect of making tupiks to-night. The way was dangerous - & a [[underlined]] long one! [[/underlined]] We conferred together - then proceeded at once [[underlined]] to try it. [[/underlined]] Koo-jes-se placed himself in Boat, throwing the line out by wh. to extend the one fast to Boat's Bow. The extension made Koo-loo took the [[?footer]] end in hand & moved along the shore over boulders & ledges toward the N. towing Boat while Koo-jes-se kept it (the Boat) proper distance out from rocks. Thus a mile was made (Northward & Westward) till the point of the Island was made where we are to try our departure under sail. There we were exposed to full blast of the now prevailing Gale

fully entitled - strong Gale - & dashing waves. It took our combined efforts to keep Boat from being stave. As it was she was swept upon the rocks & left high & dry 3 or 4 times. We all began to think our [[underlined]] work too desperate, [[/underlined]] but seeing that we had gained a point that by a well directed tack we should make to the windward of a shoal ahead that yawned as it were for us we opened sail & pushed off! Our course now near across the harbor back to large Island that extends up to channel that we have to enter to reach 16th Enc. This was going to ([[underlined]] from [[/underlined]]) Tupiks a round about way. To reach Tupiks at least, 5 miles in all, we had to make & of the most difficult Workings imaginable.
I will endeavor to make sketch soon of our track of the P.M. & night.
Making without any mishap the large or one of the Main Islands that surround
