(5 1861 Sept 12 Ths. 17 Enc 35 D out slightly divided from the Mts (red brick one) by narrow water. A long low Island further in bay commencing far up came in view & [[?]] wh. our course now is. A channel 1/2 to 1/4 mile in width bet. Isds just parted & this outer one. Trend appearing to be N & S by C. hIX-m00 come to an Island on wh. we see Tupiks & the Black Boat of other party. Tide being well down Boat & Tupiks high up. I told Koo-jes-se that I would like to step over on Main land that I might get sights from elevated points of the Bay round about. I saw it was his purpose to stop on the same Island as other party. He said (rather [[underlined]] sharply [[/underlined]] I thought) Stop on this Island, pointing to the one at our left along wh. we was coasting. I replied I could get no good views of the various points I wished to sight on such a low island closed in by others as it is continuous I there offering to be a much [[end page]] [[start page]] (10 1861 Sept 12 Ths 17th Enc 35 D out better place too for our Tupiks over there pointing to grass plots that are to be seen on a Cape that extends out from the base of the Mts of Kin-gaite. I had it in view long time before reaching here that the point opposite on Kin-gaite side would be a favorable one for our 17th Enc. - that there I could ascend the Mts one of wh. is the one I sighted & termed "Peak in the distance" from 16th Enc. & on the Island I made the obns at Meridian or about. Koo-jes-se said in reply to my last remark: 'Low water - make much work for me (him) to-night to take care of Boat. I felt almost [[underlined]] boiling over with rage [[/underlined]] but I wisely kept all to myself. I see that nothing short of a storm (even this itself would not effect it) would move him to gratify me in this. How perfectly the Savages do this people represent!
