(5) 2) 1861 Oct 3d Thurs. This P.M. & eve, I have been making active in preparations for the new trip. On the coming in to-night of Whale cruising fleet, (7 Boats) 4 manned with Kod-lu-narrs & 3 by Innuits, I proceeded at once in engaging crew to accompany me. As Capt. B. consented to spare Ebierbing, I first spoke to him. On thinking of it a few minutes, he expressed a willingness to go. Then taking Koo-ter-e-nung ("Mr. Miner") down into the aft cabin where was Capt. B. with his (Capt B's) assistance in conversing with him (K.) I engaged him. After supper, went ashore to visit some of the numerous Innuits there, with the object of making up balance of crew.
