Saturday Oct 5th 1861 AM 20° N. Light - Cloudy = at VII AM W. strong at VIII AM S.W. Gale M 32° S.W. - Full Gale - Cloudy - P.M. 35 S W " " " [[dittos for: Full Gale - Cloudy]] Still aboard the "George Henry" unable to depart on account bad, stormy weather. This Morning as early as two AM the weather fine - but at VI-00 it had changed to threatening, portentious clouds. The Whalers put off at that hour (VI) - but were obliged to return by 8 A.M. from snow storm & gale. No Whale seen. Now 1/2 past 8 A.M. Wind Mod. gale from S.W. Two days now about passed from the time I intended to start. To-morrow must find me on my way or I fear I shall be obliged to give up the intended trip. The Innuits that I engaged begin to hesitate - & [[underlined]] fear! [[/underlined]] Koo-ter-nu-ung ("Miner") came aboard this morning saying 'Ik-ke' (cold) & giving me to understand that he could not go because he had no [[end page]] [[start page]] 1861 Oct 5 Sat. Winter jacket made. I reached up, at once, & drew down my took too jacket wh. I intended to wear (& wh. I very much need) & held itout to him saying he should have that to use - that it was a good one & would keep him O-Ko (warm). This was an unexpected [[underlined]] removal [[/underlined]] of his excuse for not accompanying me. He hung his head & acted - Innuit like - [[underlined]] dog-ish. [[/underlined]] I must get another to supply his place for I think he will continue to decline to go - tho' he promised me he would. Others of the engaged crew may fail to keep [[underlined]] their [[/underlined]] word. If I cannot supply their places as they back out, the trip to Oo-pung=ne-wing & places about there [[underlined]] will have to be given up [[/underlined]] - a sad disappointment to me. An Innuit mother & child - & dog "Bar-be-Kusk" eating from same dish! While walking deck with Capt. B. this Morning the look placed a pan of "Dark-Water" & the leavings of the
