men of the 4 Boats, for the haste in which they put off at X-00 could not exchange the civilization feet gear wh. they had on at the time for the Innuit kind wh. they always wear in the Boats in cold weather. Consequently when they came in at one PM, every one complained of the bitter cold they experienced in their feet in the 3 hours out. Leathers made into Boots & shoes, civilization style, as at home, may answer their purpose there, but with them here, one's feet suffer & freeze quite as soon as without them. Innuit dress I say - out & out - for this region in Cold Weather. Civilization dress may answer for [[underlined]] one month [[/underlined]] in the year (about the length of Summer in these regions) but not longer, unless one chooses to suffer - & freeze.

become perfectly posted in Whalers' movements. The Whales seem to know quite [[underlined]] too much! [[/underlined]] - quite enough to keep a proper distance between their pursuers & their own imperial greatness.
Most undoubtedly the whales seen & chased here are from the 2d Inlet above "Northumberland Inlet" - the "Cumberland Strait" of Davis - where they have acquired their [[underlined]] schooling [[/underlined]] in fearfulness & caution. At no former time has there been so large a number of Whaling Vessels in Northumberland Inlet as this & last year. From the U.S. 7 whaling vessels there & the usual No. of English. That Inlet must be thoroughly fished.
Capt. B. seems about used up in his deep anxieties & every day disappointments. It is too bad - the non-success that follows such persevering, [[underlined]] unflagging [[/underlined]] efforts as are prompted by Capt. B. & made by his officers & men. But how can it be helped? There is an Over Ruler over all things - man plans. God oft times overwhelmes the fairest prospects with disappointment.
