just turned out was done. The Steward broke off the end of one & said: 'They are done'. The eccentric Morgan stood by, & with long face, asked the steward to let him see (?). Steward unsuspectingly handed Morgan the portion of the one he had broken (wh. was the larger portion of the fried Nut, by all odds). Morgan took it, put the whole out of sight [[underlined]] instanter [[/underlined]] - that is, crammed it into his mouth. Soon as M. had finished masticating & swallowing it he said: 'Yes, that Dough-nut is done, [[underlined]] Sure, I cannot vouch for the others!' [[/underlined]]
I never ate dough-nuts fried in the very best of lard that tasted better than those cooked in Whale oil to-day. Whale oil when properly tried out & kept from "bilge water" & all other extraneous matter, will remain [[underlined]] White & Sweet, [[/underlined]] the same as when it leaves the Try pots. Why whale oil in the States usually smells so offensive, is on account of foreign matter becoming incorporated with it, or, from its having been burnt.
A strange story to some people (to most) in the States - frying Dough-nuts & baking bread in Lamp oil!

Nevertheless, a fact - & what is more - [[underlined]] they are good too. [[/underlined]] I can testify to this.
At 2 O'clock this P.M. a heavy, storm Snow storm commenced. Now VIII P.M. storm increasing. Many natives remain aboard to-night being unable to get ashore on account of ice & storm. Try-Works yet in full blast not having completed boiling out.
Now finishing up on the tongues which require longer time in trying out the oil than the blubber around the body part of the Whale. Several of the hands on the sick list to-day for having partaken too freely of boiled "Black-Skin"!
Innuits about here blessed with "Black-Skin" & Crang of the 2 Whales most of wh. they have placed in Deposite for Winter here. How rejoiced I would have been to get hold of the like at one time last winter when at Oo-Kood-lear [[underlined]] starving! [[/underlined]]
