(14 1861 Oct. 17 Ths but the 2d call brought him to. I managed to get the knots of my leg rubed out before he got to me. It was some time before I could proceede. recovering the use of limb I again joined Shev-ek-koo in his swiftness. The time of our descent was not 1/4 of that consumed in going up. When within 1/2 mile of the boat saw balance of crew awaiting our return. Following our tracks, made going up came to jacket & pants. Arrived back to Boat 4 P.M. having been 5 hours absent from it. We started at once for the vessel - made slow progress at 1st on a/c of the ice. At length reached open water, raised sail & sped away. While up the Mt. balance of crew shot 3 brace ducks. Soon as aboard asked Capt B. if his men had another Whale? He replied that as yet he did not know - but the indications were that, as the Boats were not, they had. He was in fine spirits - but alas, how soon were they changed to the very depth of grief! Shev-ek-Koo was the 1st one of the crew up the side of the vessel. I remained in the Boat gathering up my Instruments. Soon as he got aboard he told Capt. B. Seko amassed down at the Entrance of the Bay. When I got aboard & down below Capt. B. came to me asking if I had seen any heavy ice - (Pack) - Davis Strait. I told him that I had, & proceeded to give him as truthful account
