1861 Oct 27 + [[Sunday]]

A new order of things commenced to-day. Two meals, 1st Table say IX AM - 2d Table 2 P.M.
We have got to part with much of our present stock of flesh - [[underlined]] I mean the flesh upon us [[/underlined]] - before we escape from our imprisonment.
I am now all of 9 inches small in circumference than when I embarked from New London.
Bread or the equivilent Flour is the most nourishing food now belonging to the "George Henry" with the single exception of Beans wh. we are to have in the form of Bean-Soup twice a week. But Bread has not all the elements necessary to give one health & strength in these regions. It is true, we have "Salt junk" & Salt Pork; but I am confident eating these meats is worse for us than if let alone.
The Pemmican & Borden's Meat Biscuit which I have aboard are the most nutricious, heat making (the former has this last quality) life-sustaining food ever brought into these regions. Under the present circumstances, I cannot think of witholding this provision from the "George Henry's" Company. Here we were on the very point of starting for Home when Pack ice hems us in here! Abundant provision had been husbanded for our use to get home. We find all at once we are destined to remain here 9 months longer!
The question then arises in each heart: 'Whence is to come the elements to surport life?' After a while we are brought to know that we have got to depend upon what we have - & what we can get by the assistance of the natives around us.
Our morning repast (those of the steerage) consists of each 2 flippers with molasses, - a mug of Coffee & Salt Junk & Pork. Dinner of an occasional Rabbit, or Partridge, or Duck pie, & say, twice a week Duff: - salt junk & Pork, a standard dish.
To-night [[underlined]] Fine [[/underlined]] - wh. means sky cloudless. The stars are ever glorious to behold on such a night as this. The bespeak God - The All Wise - the All powerful - The I am what I am.
Many of the "George Henry's" Co. have been getting in readiness to go out hunting to-morrow.
On Capt. B's wants for the intrest of all concerned handed him out a bag of shot. I have already expressed to him that whatever I have that is necessary to the surport of the lives of the George H's Company is at his disposal.
