1861 Nov. 10 + [[Sunday]] to the Western. It had the appearance of a golden cloud with but little of the shooting rays usually attendant on display here of Aurora. The belt was nearly [[underlined]] uniform [[/underlined]] in width (being about 7 Degrees) & in brilliancy, tho' there were alternate spaces of golden gauze through wh. stars twinkled. At hVII-m15 the heavens overhead were in a blaze of [[underlined]] living [[/underlined]] glory - anon it extended Easterly & Westerly - but the [[underlined]] grand [[/underlined]] center was in Zenith. One moment the Aurora was shooting up in perpendicular rays or beams - all at once, another arch of Aurora would sweep easterly across the very face of the 1st. Quick as thought the whole became of varied, brilliant hues - crimson red at the base, rose-red next, then softening into celandine & pea green, violet blue, purple & golden. From one end of the arch, hair like brows would shoot out at right angles with the main rays of the arch lifting & falling, in wavy like motions reminding me of the expanding streams of water rushing from the pipe nozels of Cincinnati Steam Fire Engines when poised one moment 45 degrees another 50° & constantly vibrating from the one position to the other. Then the Aurora "With sweeping glories glides along in air And shakes the sparkles from its blazing hair". While several of the "George Henry's" Company were witnessing this fine sight, our faces upturned to zenith, during the [[underlined]] finest [[/underlined]] part of the display, Morgan cried out in his quaint [[end page]] [[start page]] Supplement of + [[Sunday]] Nov 10th 1861 To-night took Alt. of [[symbol: Moon]] at its Meridian but from some defect of Artificial Horizon or subsequent slip of the stick of the Sextant in bringing it below deck the Latitude deduced [[underlined]] too low.
