though out on the Bay ice can see the snow flying in the furious wind.
The Toong-wine Innuits aboard early this Morning. They hold over till weather becomes more favorable. Rogers from Ookoodlear is expected back to-day - though it may be he will not attempt to travel while snow flies as now.
Yesterday while the 2d Mess were having their dinner, such a hint was thrown out that on it I shall act accordingly. It was said that they (the men of the G.H.) bought & paid for all the Whale Meat eaten on board & therefore they alone had the right to it. Mr. S. (continued they) contributes nothing towards getting it, therefore we will not let him have any by the plan we now have. Had I known of this feeling before I should have ceased eating whale before. As I now understand the matter the men of the Aft Cabin, buy tobacco of the G.H. & with it buy whale Beef of the Innuits. I concluded by the broad hint I should eat no more whale unless I purchased the same direct from the Innuits.
This Morning I had a lot of fried Whale sent me with mug of Coffee. I drank the Coffee eat 1/2 a sea cake & ceased.

Mate Rogers returned from Oo-Kood-lear this Eve Six [[strikethrough]] PM. [[/strikethrough]] I find that "Sam" one of the forward hands accompanied him & Koo-jes-se. He has succeeded in getting a few skins - took-too -

hardly speak so hoarse was he. Koo-jes-se could not speak a loud word a few minutes after entering the Cabin. The Driving Dogs a tax on the voice. Rogers reports that he got to lower end Oo-Kood-lear Island where he found Ugarny & other Innuits located 2 PM. Says that Ugarny lost his Boat on his way up from the ship & nearly every thing in it. Ugarny found much ice after he got out of this Bay - was 6 or 7 days getting to a small Island just above Roger's Island. The Boat could not be got to the Island on a/c the ice - his ropes were not long enough to reach from Island to Boat. His crew was quite unequal to the task of drawing the Boat up onto the ice consisting of little OoKoodlear, Kimmulm & the like.
A N.E. storm came up in the night & the ice swept away the Boat. Obliged to remain on the Island till ice made. The Bay Frozen over with smooth ice. Last year filled with Pack. Since new ice made Jonhy Bull has caught 7 seals, Bob 2 another Innuit 5 & Ugarny about 12. The Innuits there liveing well.
This A.M. I took a walk over to Ebeirbing's. On entering the Igloo my eye caught at once a piece of Muk-tuk. I told Tuk-oo-li-too that I was hungry - to give me some of that Muk-tuk. She handed me a piece. I cut off a slice - it was very strong - the Ook-sook stinking - but though it went hard, I eat quite liberally as I felt that it was from [[underlined]] a true liberal hand [[/underlined]] - & I felt hungry.
Tho' hungry, I cannot eat where every morsel I put into my mouth is looked upon by some of those around me as if I was taking away what belongs to them.
There is a weight pressing heavily upon me. By my proposition, I have parted with everything essential to the support of life for the benefit of others - & yet I soon find myself struggling for existence. In fact by my proposition delivered to Capt B., I reserve not a thing - not a thing for my own personal benefit being influenced wholly for the good of others!
I have about 1/4 Box tobacco left wh. I must have for my own benefit under the circumstances - with wh.
