The Island wh. I have visited to-day is one that Koo-jes-se pointed out to ^[[me]] last winter while he & I were on our way from the ship to Oo-pung-ne-wing (an Island 3 miles S. West from said small Isld.) where we found Annawa & other Innuits.
The Island ^[[the one of my 1st visit to-day]] generally called "Kod-lu-nan" because [[underlined]] White men [[/underlined]] lived on it - built stone houses & also a ship. The ship was built for the object of escaping from the regions & making their way to where White men live - to where they came from. Koo-jes-se as we passed along ^[[over the ice last winter]] with the Island Kod-lu-narn at our right said that White men (Kod-lu-narns) once built a ship there - but I had little reason to give much attention to it from the fact that I knew that to build a ship required [[underlined]] such material [[underlined]] as the regions are wholly destitute of. But when I heard the history of Oo-ki-ju-ax-i-ni-noo (Ugarng's mother) I saw at once the probability that Koo-jes-se's
statement was true. From what I have seen to-day, I am fully convinced that many - very many years ago - men of Civilization [[strikeout]]?once[[/strikeout]] did live upon the Island (called by Innuits "Kod-lu-narn") & that [[underlined]] they did build a vessel [[/underlined]] [[?]] - probably a schooner -
The evidence is this: Coal,-flint-stone, fragments of Brick & Tile, as made reservoir for fresh water, an ^[[??]] trench on an incline of the same as a ship is built on stocks - the ruins of
3 stone houses - one 12 feet square & palpable evidence of its [[?h?under ink blot, next words on next page is "having been erected"]]
