movements - now & then the tip of upper part of fluke reaching over the Boat's side as if to deal destruction to all aboard -[[strikethrough]] one of the strokes [[/strikethrough]] A portion of the force of one of these blows was spent on John Antone resulting as described. Morgan to save himself jumped onto the opposite side of Boat. The sail by one ^[[of the blows]] [[strikethrough]] blows [[/strikethrough]] was lifted from its "stop" & thrown down. Happily this Boat was not stove as all expected, the Whale spending its ^[[greatest]] ferociousness in tearing up Sea-Water. All this occured within a few seconds when the Whale turned down for making "soundings" as [[strikethrough]] they [[/strikethrough]] ^[[this species, the Mystecitus, normally does when harpooned. "Soundings" made, up he came - but was met by ^[[two other harpoons & the]] life taking instant, the Whale lance, wh. set him "spouting blood" - The death stroke is by this last instrument. How truly is Man the Ruler over all the Creatures of Earth - even of Great Whales! Some of the Innuits on this last trip 3 Ducks  & 1 Rein-deer - 'A thousand  or more of the former seen & many shots made' but only the few indicated secured.
A present of ^[[the]] took-too saddle made to Capt. B. also the Tusks of the Walrus given me by An-na-wa at 2d Encampment.  To-night the Aurora fine as usual in the Southern sky.
I have not returned a day too soon for the water of the Bay ^[[in many places]] is growing thick as thick porridge from the severe cold. This will make it necessary, if severe cold weather continues, that the "George Henry" depart from her present quarters [[strikethrough]] for [[/strikethrough]] Homeward bound.
